First casualty of Hurricane Irene: D Batteries

Most hardware stores and home centers along the Eastern Seaboard ran out of D-Cell batteries early on Friday as residents prepared for the expected arrival of Hurricane Irene. Typically not a fast-turning item, the big round batteries are essential for full-sized flashlights and portable radios.

Mercier's Hardware in Warren, R.I., was out on Friday. In Port Chester, N.Y., both Costco and Ace Hardware had no D batteries left. The editor of the Oxford Patch put out an online plea to his readers on Friday after visiting stores in seven Connecticut towns. “D batteries: Know where to find them?”

Alan Talman, owner of Karp’s Hardware on Long Island, N.Y., received a pallet of D-sized batteries early on Friday during his regular Do it Best shipment. “I ordered it three or four days ago because I’m a gambler,” Talman said. “If you have [several] flashlights, they all need D-cells, and of course the Maglights take them too."

All the D batteries were sold out by 3 p.m. on Friday.
