Man reportedly bitten by snake in garden center
A man was bitten on the hand by a pygmy rattlesnake in a Wal-Mart Supercenter garden center in Pembroke Pines, Fla., according to local media reports and the Associated Press. The snake apparently was hiding in the foliage of plants displayed in the store and sprang out at the customer as he was shopping.
Following the July 6 incident, the man reportedly was taken to nearby Miramar Hospital and given antivenin for the bite.
Bites from pygmy rattlesnakes, native to Florida, are rarely fatal. The 42-year-old man was recovering from the incident, according to reports.
The store immediately closed the garden center following the incident for an inspection by local animal control authorities; the center has since reopened.
