A new Ace Hardware store opened in the Crabapple section of Alpharetta, Ga., according to an article on northfulton.com. 

The new store, Ace Hardware Crabapple, will hold a grand opening event that will run all day April 11. The store at 12350 B-1 Arnold Mill Rd. opened for business earlier this month.

Citing a shock and fire hazard, Ace Hardware is recalling the Ace Clamp-On LED Work Light, sold at Ace locations and other hardware stores between September and December 2013.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the cord bushing inside the light base has exhibited a tendency to fail, which allows the cord wiring to pull out of the base and expose bare wire.

No injuries have been reported.

Port Washington N.Y.-based wholesale distributor PACOA will be joining Distribution America. PACOA serves independent hardware, paint and lumber retailers throughout much of New York, New England, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. 

Distribution America’s board of directors voted unanimously on the addition. Recently, Distribution America lost Emery-Waterhouse to Ace Hardware.

Emery-Waterhouse CEO Steve Frawley anticipates changes now that Ace Hardware has acquired the 170-year-old regional wholesale distributor. Some will be subtle, some substantial, and some as yet unknown. 

The deal, terms of which were not revealed, also marks the beginning of a separation between Portland, Maine-based Emery and Distribution America, the co-operative of nine regional distributors that pool together as a buying group.

In celebration of seven straight years winning "Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Home Improvement Retail Stores" in the J.D. Power Home Improvement Retailer Satisfaction Study, Ace Hardware is kicking off its first-ever J.D. Power Award Neighborhood Tour across the country.

Ace's J.D. Power trophies will be showcased and presented for photo opportunities at stores across the country during the 17-week tour, which will make stops at more than 100 stores in 24 states.

Springfield, Mass.-based Rocky’s Ace Hardware collected more than 4 tons of pet food, along with beds, leashes, treats, toys and cleaning supplies and delivered them to local animal shelters. The final weight of pet food amassed totaled an amazing 8,776 pounds.

ACO Hardware, a 52-store chain described as Michigan’s largest independent home and hardware retailer, will join the Ace Hardware brand. 

Based in Farmington Hills, Mich., ACO will operate the new Ace Hardware stores under the name Great Lakes Ace, a nod to the retailer’s Michigan roots. ACO was originally founded in 1946 as Traskos Brothers Hardware Depot in Dearborn, Mich. All of the company’s stores are in Michigan.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware appointed a new chief for Westlake Ace Hardware, the 85-store Midwestern chain.

Tom Knox, 59, was named president and CEO of Westlake, which is owned by the co-op -- and which is also the co-op's largest member. Knox wil be leaving his role as VP retail business development, training and supply at Ace's corporate offices and take on his new role in Lenexa, Kan.

Launching its third annual Holiday Pet Food Drive, Springfield, Mass.-based Rocky’s Ace Hardware teamed with Nutro Pet Foods to help homeless and abandoned pets. The drive runs now through Dec. 23. 

Each of the 32 Rocky’s Ace Hardware stores have partnered with an area Humane Society or Shelter to collect food this Holiday Season for the much forgotten and unfortunate animals in our own community.

True Value Co. senior VP and chief merchandising officer Mike Clark will retire from the co-op after serving in an advisory role through the end of the year.

Clark's post will be filled by former Ace Hardware executive Ken Goodgame, the co-op announced Tuesday.

Ben’s Supercenter, located in Brown City and Marlette, Mich., has announced that its stores will affiliate with Ace Hardware and expand to a third location in Marlette.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware has retooled the packaging for its builders hardware department.

According to Cynthia Brasic, Ace brand manager, the new color-coded labels help make the selection process easier for the consumer. It’s the first packaging makeover in the co-op’s builders hardware aisle in about 20 years, she said.

Orlando, Fla. -- First came a roll out of Clark & Kensington private label paint. Next came a blockbuster deal with Valspar. And now comes the introduction and unveiling of the Paint Studio, the new brand for Ace Hardware’s self-described “Paint Reinvention” program.

It’s all part of Ace Hardware’s efforts to get relevant and make noise in the retail paint arena, said John Surane, senior VP merchandising, marketing and sales.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based co-op Ace Hardware kicks off its three-day Fall Convention and Exhibits Tuesday morning with an early morning General Session at the Orange County Convention Center.  

The event organizers say they expect more than 5,000 Ace retailers from all 50 states and 73 countries to attend. 

In addition to buying and networking on the convention floor, the event’s retailer training sessions run the gamut from strategies to remove unproductive inventory to prevent shoplifting and to increase retail space productivity.

Like many hardware stores that come to embrace change, Delbert Brown’s Ace Hardware in Stanton, Ky., needed room to grow. Its 8,000-sq.-ft. layout simply wasn’t cutting it, especially when it had an extra 2,100 sq. ft. of adjoining property essentially serving as wasted storage space.

“It was no use at all,” said owner Delbert Brown.

Before: Given that he already owned the space, the decision to expand was a virtual no-brainer.

Orlando -- Author and customer service consultant Shep Hyken told Ace Hardware dealers that being helpful means more than just making sales. It means being a bigger part of the community.

Hyken is author of “Amaze Every Customer Every Time,” an analysis and case study of Ace Hardware stores. During the General Session of the Ace Hardware Fall Convention & Exhibits here at the Orange County Convention Center, Hyken pointed to tools retailers can use to beat the competition at customer service.

Two-step distribution is riding a housing recovery for both LBM and hardware.

Sales gains and growth were the major themes of the HCN Top 300 Retailer and Top 200 Pro Dealer Scoreboards released earlier this year.

So it’s only logical that the HCN Top 100 Distributor Scoreboard shares in that growth, fueled by rising prices on certain products and a long awaited — though staggering and somewhat unreliable — housing market recovery.

Paint giant Valspar has every intention of profiting from its move to acquire the Ace Hardware private-label paint business, it just hasn't happened yet.

Valspar executives walked analysts through the plan during the company's third-quarter conference call. The analysts seemed highly interested in Valspar's seven-month-old relationship with Ace.

The latest financial release from Chicago-based True Value Co. showed the co-op’s approximate store count down by 100 stores compared to previous recent press releases.

In the boilerplate description of the company at the bottom of the release announcing second-quarter results, the co-op described its footprint as “approximately 4,500 independent retailer locations worldwide.”

Costello's Hardware, Home & Garden of New York's Long Island has three stores ranked in the top 20 of Ace Hardware's leading gift card sales stores.

It helps having high-traffic stores in densely populated areas, said David Faulhaber, marketing coordinator for the 19-store chain based in Deer Park, N.Y. It also helps having a high-ticket, "giftier" merchandise mix that includes outdoor living, holiday-related products, power tools and housewares.

Ace Hardware has announced the appointment of two new member directors to its board of directors: Stew Elliott Jr., of Elm Grove, Wis.; and Amy Kaplanis of Granby, Colo.

Elliott, 55, is a majority shareholder of Elliott Ace Hardware, a four-store Ace chain located in the western suburbs of Milwaukee. Prior to taking ownership in Ace Hardware, Elliott held a leadership sales role with Amerock, a vendor serving the convenience hardware industry, for six years.

J.D. Power & Associates Wednesday morning released its 2013 Home Improvement Retailer Satisfaction Study showing Ace Hardware at the top of the list for the seventh consecutive year.
