Almost every manufacturer and retailer has added a version of this product to its assortment, although some have done so reluctantly. Within the paint industry, many dismiss paint-and-primer combos as a marketing ploy that raises the price of a gallon of paint. Others say it can save time and money and has a rightful place as a consumer option.

Paint may be a very emotional decision for consumers, but in the retail world, it’s a simple business plan: If you want to sell a lot of paint, dedicate enough space to it, assign a full-time, well-trained sales associate to the paint desk, and carry more than two lines of paint. One of those brands should cater to the pros. Find a way to keep the contractors separated from the homeowners, which is not all that difficult; professional painters don’t like to sit on sofas surrounded by tasseled pillows.

Valspar Paint has announced a replacement guarantee for Lowe’s customers who buy a gallon of paint and are simply dissatisfied with the color. From now until Oct. 8, 2012, Valspar is offering a free replacement color to anyone who does not “absolutely love” their first color choice. The Love Your Color Guarantee applies only to purchases of Valspar Signature Colors Interior Paint at Lowe's, and will be issued through a rebate for up to two gallons of a replacement Valspar paint color.

That theory is being tested by innovations that bring one-coat prowess or eco-friendly features to customers' walls, but color's importance cannot be ignored.

Los Angeles-based paint manufacturer and distributor Dunn-Edwards has studied the trends in color and produced a forecast that it calls "Simply Refocus."

Knoxville, Tenn.-based regional hardware distributor House-Hasson Hardware is expanding its paint and sundries offerings with the addition of a new sales team from an unidentified “financially ailing paint company,” according to an article in the Knoxville News.

“We are getting full-blown into paint and paint sundries," company president Don Hasson told the news outlet.

Lowe’s has added a Yolo Colorhouse, a regional line of eco-friendly paints, to its West Coast stores, according to an article in the Portland Business Journal.

Lowe’s has added Yolo Colorhouse, a regional line of eco-friendly paints, to its West Coast stores, according to an article in the Portland Business Journal.

Portland-based Yolo will sell its no-VOC interior paints and primers in Oregon, Washington and California, according to the article. A 1-gallon container will retail for $22.98. 

The 92-color line will be available at 20 Lowe’s stores between Seattle and Los Angeles.
