GAF's Royal Sovereign Shingles are celebrating a 50th anniversary.

First introduced as “Sovereign” in December of 1961, the shingle that has now evolved into GAF’s popular Royal Sovereign is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Initially launched as an organic shingle, Sovereign became one of the first glass mat shingles in 1972, and is one of the longest-running asphalt shingle brands on the market, according to the Wayne, N.J.-based GAF.

Wayne, N.J.-based GAF announced a significant expansion of its efforts to support post-consumer shingle recycling. Building on its Certified Green Roofer program, which has more than 100 members, GAF has made a multiyear commitment to sponsor the Find-A-Recycler section of ShingleRecycling.org.

ShingleRecycling.org is the leading resource for information about recycling asphalt shingles.

CertainTeed has announced its intention to settle a class action lawsuit over a line of asphalt shingles manufactured from 1987 to 2005. The organic shingles, made with a felt reinforcement material, were allegedly subject to premature failure or did not perform up to the expectations of end users.
