Herndon, Va.-based Beacon Roofing Supply celebrated solid top-line growth during a quarter that started fast and finished with some tough weather conditions.

The company posted first-quarter sales of $552.1 million, up 7.5% from $513.7 million in the same quarter last year. Net income slipped to $15.0 million, down from $18.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

Peabody, Mass.-based Beacon Roofing Supply CEO Paul Isabella added color to his company’s record sales performance for the quarter and the full year.

For the quarter, residential sales were up 4.8%, commercial sales were up 8.3%, and complementary sales were up 3.4%. “This marks two consecutive quarters where all three product lines have seen positive organic growth, 1.2% last quarter and 6% this quarter.”

Beacon Roofing Supply reported strong gains in the third quarter, with sales up 12% on a year-over-year basis and net income up 7% from 2012's $25.4 million.

Specifically, net Q3 sales came in at $627 million versus last year's $561 million. Residential and non-residential roofing products sales increased 0.2% and 1.1%, respectively, in existing markets. Complementary product sales rose 5.2%.

Net income came in at $27.2 million, despite a company statement that Q3 performance was adversely affected by heavy rains and fewer hail storms.

Peabody, Mass.-based Beacon Roofing Supply posted a second-quarter net loss of $0.2 million, compared with net income of $3.1 million in the same quarter last year.

Sales increased 5.3% to $416.3 million in the quarter.

CEO Paul Isabella described the second quarter as "challenging."

He added: "We experienced harsh weather conditions in many of our markets, and we were up against a very strong second quarter last year when our existing market sales were up 28%."

Up against a strong comparison quarter, the specialty distributor saw total sales gain in its first quarter as organic sales declined.

Peabody, Mass.-based Beacon Roofing Supply sales increased 4.9% to $513.7 million in the first quarter, up from $489.9 million in the same quarter last year.

Existing-store sales declined 4.6%, or 7.7%, when adjusted to the same number of business days.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

Headquartered in Santa Ana, Calif., Structural has six locations in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The 64-year-old company had total annual sales of approximately $81 million in 2011.

Beacon Roofing Supply has reached an agreement to acquire Cassady Pierce Co., a distributor of residential and commercial roofing products, for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 1947, Cassady Pierce has six locations in the Pittsburgh area and annual sales of approximately $52 million. Closing on the transaction is expected on May 31, 2012.
