Two family-owned hardware stores, an Ace and a Do it Best, are going up against each other on the same block in Minneapolis, according to a news report on KSTP-TV. Although the owners remain friendly, the competition is not.

Pongs Do it Best has big plans in Indonesia

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. signed a deal that will bring the Do it Best brand to Indonesia for the first time. The deal also landed Do it Best a partnership with Paulus Ong, who helped grow Ace Indonesia from three stores in 1999 to 45 stores in 2011.

Grand openings are planned for Aug. 3 for the first four Pongs Do it Best Hardware stores in Jakarta.

Bulb exchange program partners with Ace, Do it Best

A city near Mesa, Ariz. has partnered with two independent hardware stores in a light bulb exchange program that aims to exchange 16,065 incandescent and halogen bulbs for more energy-efficient replacements, free of charge.

Apache Junction, Ariz., working with Best Hardware, a Do it Best dealer, and Frontier Ace Hardware, will allow customers to bring in their energy-inefficient bulbs to city hall and receive, at no cost, a voucher for a replacement low-energy compact fluorescent (CFL) or light emitting diode (LED) bulb from one of the hardware stores.
