Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed are moving to a new headquarters in Pennsylvania.

Saint-Gobain, the world’s largest building materials company, signed a lease for 320,000 sq. ft. of space at 20 Moores Road in Malvern, Pa.

Hines Supply, a subsidiary of US LBM, has opened a full-service building supply center and design showroom in Grayslake, Ill., north of Chicago.

The location, at 939 South Route 83 in Grayslake, is celebrating its grand opening today. It will be managed by 30-year industry veteran Ed Graafsma.

WOLF's Key Buyer Index (KBI) was up substantially between November and January, which runs counter to many of the less-than-stellar economic indicators from the building industry this winter.

The January 2014 KBI score came in at 64.73, a 20.6% increase from November 2013's score of 53.67. January's score is also a big improvement over the year-ago score of 58.33.

Whether we’re in a boom or a bust economy, there’s no shortage of luxury items in the home channel — and in fact, brand equity for many of the nation’s high-end companies has only improved in recent years, with well-heeled customers virtually shielded from the squeeze of the recession.

Then again, when it comes to home improvement retailing, luxury can mean anything ranging from prohibitively expensive building materials to upscale flashlights that may only retail for a little under $200 — attainable enough for many middle-class Americans.

Paul Gertner, president of Starborn Industries, a manufacturer and distributor of fastening products, was named 2013 Lumber Person of the Year during the inaugural Annual Meeting of the New York Long Island Lumber Association. 

Gertner was cited for this honor in recognition of his “long-standing dedication, support and service to the lumber and building materials industry.”

Mansfield, Mass.-based distributor Boston Cedar brought in some star power to help relaunch its decking, railing and trim product lineup.

Hockey legend Bobby Orr was on hand at the event in Providence, R.I., as was Providence College basketball coach Ed Cooley.  The celebration was designed to launch the compan's new decking, railing and trim product line up, and it attracted many of the leading northeast lumber and building materials dealers, according to the company.

“Russin Lumber has a fine reputation in New England and the Mid-Atlantic as a wholesale distributor of building materials, and we are pleased to have been selected to provide them with our high-quality redwood products and strong customer service,” said Ray Barbee, VP sales and marketing.

Many companies have been organizing drives and fundraisers for victims of Typhoon Haiyan since it touched down in the Philippines, and the home improvement and building materials industry is finding ways to make its own mark on the recovery effort.

Lumber Liquidators is providing tents and aid to affected families via the nonprofit ShelterBox USA. The organization delivers compact kits and emergency supplies to disaster survivors, which include tents, blankets, tools, water purification equipment, stoves, children's activity kits and more.

Boise, Idaho-based BMC, the building materials and construction services provider and 2012 HCN Pro Dealer of the Year, completed the acquisition of Sacramento-based Western Building Specialties.

The move will expand BMC's millwork offerings in Northern California and strengthen the company's business in the Central Valley of California, a market described as a key U.S. market for homebuilders.

Sacramento, Calif.-based Blomberg Windows is closing down after nearly 60 years in the building materials industry.

Citing changes in the economy and building industry, the company has enlisted the services of Bluett & Associates to deal with going-out-of-business logistics, sell its remaining assets and properties, and to work with the staff to fulfill existing orders.

According to the company, the decision was reached "with sadness and only after careful and thorough deliberation."

Brian J. Harris has been appointed CFO and Anne L. Benedict has been named chief legal officer at heavy-side building materials company Summit Materials. Harris' appointment is effective Oct. 14, while Benedict's is Oct. 1.

Harris replaces John R. Murphy, who has stepped down as interim CFO and will continue to serve as a director and chairman of the audit committee of the board of directors for Summit's indirect parent company.

Midwestern building materials distributor Amerhart has made three internal promotions to fill key management positions, including the appointment of Chad Warpinski to the role of marketing manager.

Most recently, Warpinski served as assistant branch manager of Amerhart-Milwaukee. In his new role, he will oversee companywide marketing initiatives for Amerhart and its suppliers.

Based in Green Bay, Wis., Amerhart is a prominent building materials distributor in the Midwestern United States with seven locations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota.

Greenbay, Wis.-based building materials distributor Amerhart has promoted Ryan Chandler to the position of branch manager for Amerhart-Sun Prairie.

Chandler will replace Dave Destiche, who will assume the role of VP marketing as part of a series of internal promotions the company recently made to fill key management positions.

Chandler touts over 15 years of sales experience at Amerhart-Sun Prairie and is intimately familiar with local operations.

The property located at 939 South Route 83 in Grayslake will be managed by former owner of Stan’s Lumber, Carl Torstenson.
