Sears Canada is opening up a new fulfillment center in Calgary, Alberta that will serve customers in Western Canada who use the Sears Direct channel.

The 240,000-sq.-ft. facility will feature advanced product and packaging systems to increase efficiency in packing and shipping small-ticket items available through Sears Canada's catalogues and ecommerce website. The addition of the facility is expected to save an average of 1 to 2 days in delivery time for most customers in Western Canada.

Sears Canada is closing three downtown stores in Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa. The move follows an announcement last month by Sears Holdings, the majority owner of Sears Canada, that it will raise about $770 million by spinning off parts of its business and selling prime real estate.

Tim-Br Marts has appointed John Steen as CFO. A senior financial executive, Steen has operational experience across a range of sectors, primarily in agribusiness/retail, manufacturing, oil and gas, and energy.

Steen, who will be based out of the company’s Calgary, AB office, will report directly to president and CEO Tim Urquhart.

He has held executive roles at a number of organizations, including UFA Co-operative Limited, Ontario Power Authority, and in South Africa at Teves Group.

Beacon Roofing Supply, one of the nation’s largest distributors of roofing, siding and other exterior building products, has announced the acquisition of Enercon Products, a roofing distributor with six locations in western Canada. Headquartered in Edmonton, Enercon also has branches in Calgary, Regina and Saskatoon, along with two branches in Vancouver. It generated annual sales of approximately $45 million in 2010.

A 142,000-sq.-ft. Lowe's store is expected to open Aug. 1, and will be the first Lowe's in Edmonton, according to a report in the Edmonton Journal.

Lowe's ran a help-wanted ad for the store in the newspaper.

The company opened its first western Canadian store last September at the CrossIron Common, near Calgary. Two other Calgary locations are expected to open in the first quarter.
