Michael H. McGarry, currently executive VP of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based PPG Industries, has been appointed to the post of chief operating officer.

McGarry will have executive oversight responsibility for all of PPGs strategic business units and operating regions and for the information technology (IT), environment, health and safety (EH&S), and purchasing functions. He will remain based at PPGs global headquarters in Pittsburgh and will continue to report to Chairman and CEO Charles E. Bunch.

• Regional VP Mark Corso joined Cedar Creek from Roberts & Dybdahl, where he spent the last 33 years in a number of executive roles. Corso began his career at GP.

Lowe’s says its pro business generates about 30% of its business, that’s up from previous estimates of about 25%. 

Rick Damron, chief operating officer of Lowe’s, said the first quarter comp-store sales for the pro was about three times the comp number for the company.

The company’s first quarter comps were up 0.9%.

Indianapolis-based appliance and electronics retailer hhgregg Inc. hired Troy H. Risch as chief operating officer.

Risch joins hhgregg from RadioShack, where he served as executive VP store operations. Prior to this, he held a variety of operational leadership positions with Target Corp., including executive VP stores. Risch will assume the COO position on May 5, 2014.

Spectrum Brands Holdings announced Andreas Rouvé has been elected to the newly created position of chief operating officer. 

Rouvé, who also remains President, International, will continue to report to Dave Lumley, president and CEO.

New York City-based home furnishings retailer Gracious Home named Rob Morrison to the post of chief operating officer.

The former Lumber Liquidators executive begins his new role on Jan. 6.

At Lumber Liquidators, Morrison was senior VP of stores and operations, a position he held since January 2006. He was also president of Artistic Tile from 2004 to 2005.

Oklahoma City-based Cedar Creek announced the completion of the buyout of its financial partners at their Springfield, Mo., location.

Cedar Creek will now own that location outright.

D.Wayne Trousdale, Cedar Creek’s chief operating officer, said: “We are pleased to finalize this transaction as we continue to look for ways to grow our footprint across the U.S.”

The Canadian home improvement giant tapped a grocery industry veteran to lead its battle against U.S. rivals.

Boucherville, Quebec-based RONA named Robert Sawyer as CEO, ending its search for a permanent replacement for long-time CEO Robert Dutton, who resigned in November.

Sawyer is the former chief operating officer of Metro Inc., the Quebec-based food retailer.

Robert Chevrier, executive chairman of RONA, trumpeted Sawyer’s retail experience.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe’s has promoted Stephen Szilagyi to the post of supply chain executive, responsible for overseeing Lowe’s state-of-the-art logistics and distribution network that expedites the replenishment of merchandise and supplies to all Lowe’s stores.

He will report to Rick Damron, chief operating officer.

Hunter Industries, a global provider of irrigation solutions for the professional market, has promoted Greg Hunter to chief operating officer, where he will be responsible for executing company strategy and optimizing the day-to-day operations for all Hunter business units. He assumes this role having held leadership positions within several key departments at Hunter, including engineering, product management, information systems and marketing.

Monroe, La.-based LBM buying group Allied Building Stores appointed Dale E. Mercer, 50, as president, effective Jan. 1, 2013.

Mercer will succeed David Stiles, a 16-year veteran of Allied, who will continue to serve as president until the end of the year. Mercer joined ABS, a dealer-owned building materials buying group in October 2008, and most recently has served as its chief operating officer. Prior to joining ABS, Mercer was VP manufacturing for Bancroft Bag at its facility in West Monroe.

Ace Hardware president and CEO Ray Griffith announced his plans to retire from the hardware cooperative on March 31, 2013, and the company’s board of directors has named Ace’s chief operating officer John Venhuizen his successor.

Effective Sept. 1, 2012, Venhuizen assumed the role of president, while retaining his existing chief operating officer duties of Ace Hardware Corp. Griffith will maintain his role as CEO until his retirement.

Bill Myrick, the former CEO of ProBuild and chief operating officer of 84 Lumber, has been hired as CEO of American Builders Supply (ABS), a leading supplier of doors, windows, millwork and trusses to home builders in Florida. ABS, which is owned by Blue Wolf Capital Partners, has five Florida locations and has consolidated four leading independent competitors in the last 15 months.

Marrone will have oversight of all of CTR's operations, including merchandising, marketing, supply chain, and store operations, including dealer relations.

Venhuizen has spent nearly two decades with Ace and most recently served as executive VP supply chain, information technology (IT) and international. According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, former Home Depot executive Matthew Pitts has joined SMS Assist as chief operating officer. 

At Atlanta-based Home Depot, Pitts was VP building services and had worked at the retailer for about 20 years. SMS is a facilities maintenance company based in Chicago. It serves about 24,000 locations.

Stock Building Supply has confirmed its plans, outlined in an April 1 memo to employees, to reorganize the company into four divisions and eliminate two top executive positions. 

The Raleigh, N.C., pro dealer will no longer have a chief operating officer or VP national sales. Instead, Stock will rely on four regional presidents/general managers, to oversee the No. 4 player in the LBM industry, according to the Home Channel News Top 350 rankings.
