True Value Co. recognized Foster True Value Hardware as one of its 13 honorees for its “Best Hardware in Town” program.

The store operates in Mariposa, Calif., where it has a strong reputation as a community supporter with sponsorships and other philanthropic efforts.   

Troy Foster, Monica Evans and Melissa Swank accepted the award during a ceremony in Atlanta earlier this year.

Do it Best Corp. entered the Elite 100 annual rankings conducted by Information Week. The recognition was linked to the co-op’s development and implementation of a dedicated app for its Sneak Peek sales events at its May and October markets.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corporation is hoping to gain a sales and marketing boost from its 90th anniversary.

To commemorate the occasion, Ace is hosting a nationwide promotion April 2-7, during which time customers can get 20% off gallons of Clark+Kensington paint+primer in one, as well as special offers on a variety of lawn, garden and outdoor living items. Some home maintenance products will also be priced at 90 cents in honor of the milestone.

Chanute, Kan.-based Cleaver Farm & Home was recognized by Chicago-based True Value Co. as one of 13 “Best Hardware Store in Town” honorees.

Accepting the award at a True Value hosted ceremony were Chris and Jason Cleaver. 

The retailer converted to the co-op’s Destination True Value format in spring 2013, and the owners see continued community support along with opportunities for growth. 

The farm-and-ranch segment has been an area of focus for the wholesaler, which describes the segment as its fastest growing.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corporation, the industry’s largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative, recognized Les Orchekowsky of Sierra Vista, Ariz., with Ace’s first-ever Ray A. Griffith Retail Leadership Award.

Named after Ace’s former CEO Ray A. Griffith who retired in March 2013, the award will be given annually to the Ace retailer that most personifies Griffith’s outstanding leadership traits and exemplifies Ace’s core values.

A new Ace Hardware store opened in the Crabapple section of Alpharetta, Ga., according to an article on northfulton.com. 

The new store, Ace Hardware Crabapple, will hold a grand opening event that will run all day April 11. The store at 12350 B-1 Arnold Mill Rd. opened for business earlier this month.

Citing a shock and fire hazard, Ace Hardware is recalling the Ace Clamp-On LED Work Light, sold at Ace locations and other hardware stores between September and December 2013.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the cord bushing inside the light base has exhibited a tendency to fail, which allows the cord wiring to pull out of the base and expose bare wire.

No injuries have been reported.

Executives from Do it Best Corp. celebrated the grand opening of the co-op’s new Retail Service Center in Sikeston, Mo.

Bob Taylor, president and CEO of Do it Best Corp., and Sikeston Mayor Jerry Pullen cut the ribbon on the 550,000-sq.-ft. facility, which will serve as the co-op’s strategic hub for product distribution to members throughout the Midwest and central United States.

Do it Best Corp. has announced the promotion of John Branigan and Tom Morgan to retail performance managers, effective immediately.

Branigan and Morgan will lead co-op efforts in aiding the growth and enhancement of member stores through retail performance programs developed exclusively for Do it Best Corp. member-owners.

Orlando, Fla. -- During its Spring Dealer Market hear, Orgill expanded its show floor to more than 750,000 sq. ft., including multiple model stores and a showcase area that introduced a new vivid Solutions paint area and a “Backyard Oasis” featuring outdoor living ideas.

Organizers said thousands of retailers from the United States, Canada and all over the world took part in the market, which drew to a close March 1.

Orlando – At the Orgill Spring Dealer Market here, the show floor dedicated a sizeable area to the art and science of impulse sales. 

Merchandise displays and educational materials elevated the status of a family of items ranging from Krud Kutter to As Seen on TV Pancake Makers.

Orgill pointed retailers to a number of statistics, for instance:

• 88% of all impulse purchases are made because an item is on sale or the shopper thinks she is getting a good price;

Emery-Waterhouse CEO Steve Frawley anticipates changes now that Ace Hardware has acquired the 170-year-old regional wholesale distributor. Some will be subtle, some substantial, and some as yet unknown. 

The deal, terms of which were not revealed, also marks the beginning of a separation between Portland, Maine-based Emery and Distribution America, the co-operative of nine regional distributors that pool together as a buying group.

Chicago-based True Value Company reported gross billings of $457.3 million for the quarter ending Dec. 28, an increase of 1.3 % from $451.5 million for the prior year quarter.

Revenue was $340.7 million, an increase of 0.2%. The co-op posted quarterly earnings of $12.5 million, down 57% from $29.1 million for the same period a year ago. Last year’s earnings were inflated by a $16.5 million non-recurring gain. Excluding that gain, earnings were down 0.8%.

Atlanta -- True Value Co.'s Special Order App for mobile devices is putting more power into the hands of retailers, according to the co-op.

What began as a concept about 18 months ago, the True Value mobile ordering app is now in its sixth month of operation. It's in use at about 1,800 retailers making thousands of orders, said Rosalee Hermens, VP and chief information officer for True Value.

Houston -- Retailers were privy to a number of below-manufacturing-cost "Power Buys" at the Ace 2014 Spring Convention & Exhibits, with the potential for added profit that "can pay for a couple of people to come to Houston," said general merchandise manager Frank Carroll at the opening General Session.

"The mindset here is a 'thank you'," he added. "Thank you for coming to Houston."

Houston -- Ace executives took the stage to deliver rousing speeches at the General Session of the Ace 2014 Spring Convention & Exhibits, congratulating retailers on a strong 2013 and outlining the co-op's vision for 2014 and beyond.

Ace even had a proprietary rock 'n' roll theme song dedicated to its strategic initiative, "20/20 Vision," which added a spirited component to a slide show presented at the session. "The view is worth the climb," crooned the singer.

Atlanta – An information-packed general session here at the True Value Reunion included up-close interviews with a new slate of senior executives and an update on the co-op’s long-running strategic planning effort.

And there was also a little comedy on the stage, as actors impersonated shoppers experiencing BBTSD, or “big box traumatic stress disorder.”

Ace Hardware Corp. announced today that it has acquired Emery-Waterhouse, the Portland, Maine-based distributor of hardlines products for independent lumber, paint, industrial and hardware outlets. 

“The acquisition of Emery-Waterhouse serves as a tremendous catalyst to leverage wholesale purchasing power,” said John Venhuizen, president and CEO, Ace Hardware. “We are confident that both Ace retailers and Emery-Waterhouse customers will benefit from the additional scale and expanded assortments.”

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corp. reported total fiscal 2013 revenues of $4.2 billion, an increase of 8.2% over the previous year.

“2013 was a record year for the company," said John Venhuizen, Ace president and CEO. “We outperformed our operating plan, exceeding $4 billion in consolidated revenues and $100 million in net income for the first time in our history.”

Parker Do it Best Lumber, based in Beaumont, Texas, was chosen as a 2014 pro dealer Entrepreneur of the Year in the category of sales of over $50 million. 

Parker Lumber has been serving builders, remodelers and homeowners for more than 80 years in Texas and now southern California. Scott Parker runs the family-owned company that employs 350 people throughout 22 locations. 

Parker’s continued growth into new markets is cited as a key factor for its success.

Do it Best Corp. has promoted Bob Gumash to regional sales and business development manager for the northeastern United States, effective immediately. He replaces Rob Schmiedel, who was recently promoted to national sales manager.
