Dallas-based Builders FirstSource has purchased West Orange Lumber Company. The deal closed on July 31, 2014. West Orange was represented by The JIAN Group of Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Groveland, Florida-based West Orange supplies lumber, roof and floor trusses, custom windows and doors, as well as installation services, to residential home builders and commercial contractors in the Central Florida region. Sales were about $15 million for fiscal 2013.

As is its annual custom (now in its fourth year), Ace Hardware Corporation recognized a new spate of Ace stores in its 2014 "Coolest Hardware Store" awards. Six stores nabbed the title out of 4,850 Ace stores worldwide, named officially during Ace's Platinum Conference held in Las Vegas.

Taylor, Michigan-based Masco announced that adjusted operating profit grew by 21% in its second quarter.

Net sales from continuing operations rose 5% to $2.3 billion, up from $2.1 billion for the second quarter of 2013.  North American sales increased 4%, and international sales increased 9% in U.S. dollars.

Builders FirstSource achieved its highest sales level since 2006 as it swung to a profit in the second quarter ended June 30.

The Dallas-based pro dealer reported sales of $426.5 million, up 7.1% from the same quarter last year. Net income was $10.6 million, compared to a net loss of $48 million in the first quarter last year.

Pleasanton, California-based Simpson Manufacturing reported a 6.4% increase in revenue during the second quarter of 2014.

Net sales for the three months ended June 30 were $207.9 million, compared to $195.3 million in the same period last year. Regionally, North America reported the largest increase in dollars, with Europe claiming the largest percentage jump at 9.1%.

Net income of $20.5 million for the quarter was also an improvement over 2013's $18.5 million bottom line. Gross profit also increased to $95.9 million from $89.2 million.

St. Paul, Minnesota-based EcoWater Systems, a Marmon Water/Berkshire Hathaway company, is transforming how consumers interact with their water treatment systems with the introduction of HydroLink Plus Wi-Fi web-based technology. HydroLink Plus makes it possible to monitor and manage EcoWater water treatment systems and water usage via a smartphone, tablet or computer from virtually anywhere inside or outside the home.

Lexington, Kentucky-based Tempur Sealy International has promoted Barry Hytinen to the title of EVP corporate development and finance.

Following its agreement last month to acquire Consorcio Comex, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based PPG Industries released what it called a record performance for its second quarter. 

PPG reported net sales from continuing operations of $4.08 billion, up 5.1% from $3.88 billion in the same quarter last year.

Net income increased 13.2% to $386 million. 

PPG announced June 30 it had reached an agreement to acquire Consorcio Comex, a leading Latin American architectural and industrial coatings company, in a transaction valued at $2.3 billion.

Barrington, Illinois-based EcoPlanet Bamboo Group has nabbed three former Weyerhaeuser executives in its latest hiring spree.

Of these, former Weyerhaeuser Solutions president Marvin Risco has been named group president. He has held multiple positions at Weyerhaeuser over the years, ranging from financial director for Weyerhaeuser Forestlands International to VP international operations in Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Michael H. McGarry, currently executive VP of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based PPG Industries, has been appointed to the post of chief operating officer.

McGarry will have executive oversight responsibility for all of PPGs strategic business units and operating regions and for the information technology (IT), environment, health and safety (EH&S), and purchasing functions. He will remain based at PPGs global headquarters in Pittsburgh and will continue to report to Chairman and CEO Charles E. Bunch.

This week, Fresno California’s Weyerhaeuser Distribution center is commemorating 35 years in business this week.

Located at 3267 S. Willow Ave., the Fresno location is one of Washington-based Weyerhaeuser’s five distribution centers in California, and one of 23 in the U.S.

Among its clients who purchase various lumber products like decking and housewrap, as well as siding and trim, are White Pine Lumber, High Sierra Lumber and 84 Lumber. Beyond just wood, the center has on-site estimate services and rebar cutting.

Kent, Ohio-based Carter Lumber continues down the expansion trail by opening a new location on the north side of Charlotte. 

The facility located at 4401 Pete Brown Rd. in Charlotte made its first deliveries Monday, five days after taking possession.

Norcross, Georgia-based Halco Lighting Technologies is recalling about 9,500 of its ProLED bulbs after receiving reports of potential overheating and falling hazards.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were five reports of the bulbs separating from the sockets, and the bulbs have a tendency to overheat and fall on consumers below. No injuries have been reported, however.

Accsys Technologies, a London-based high-tech wood manufacturer, has chosen Snavely Forest Products as one of the U.S. distributors of its Accoya wood.

The wood—which is currently available in a handful of U.S. stores — goes through a process that prevents insect damage and fungus by replacing water-bonding molecules with more stable ones.

As of the 2016 lawn & garden season, Briggs & Stratton is trimming down on its production to help cut costs, which will include limiting its Snapper consumer lawn and garden equipment and consolidating its products manufacturing facilities.

The company will also close its McDonough, Georgia location and consolidate production into existing facilities in Wisconsin and New York.

Knoxville, Tenn.-based House-Hasson Hardware says its June 19-21 dealer broke all previous records for attendance, attracting some 2,300 to 2,400 people.

“We sold more of every product,” said Don Hasson, president. “People are feeling better about the economy, and when they feel better they buy more. That means dealers are buying products looking to the next six months rather than the next few weeks.”

IKEA announced its plans to build a Las Vegas location, to be opened in the summer of 2016.

So far, the retailer has submitted its plans to Nevada's Clark County. The 351,000-sq.-ft. store would be located in the Spring Valley area, approximately 13 miles southwest of downtown Las Vegas.

Winona, Minnesota-based Fastenal Company reported steady progress for the second quarter of 2014, with sales and earnings both positive.

Net sales for the three-month period ended June 30, 2014 were $949.9 million, up 12.1% from the same period in 2013.

Net earnings came in at $130.5 million, an increase of 7.9% from last year's $121.0 million in earnings.

The company largely attributed the boost to higher unit sales and its recent investment in leadership and training, as well as in distribution and internal manufacturing capabilities.

The APA Board of Trustees approved the Canadian plywood manufacturer for membership, making it the fourth supplier of its kind to join the organization this year.
