Atlanta-based The Home Depot reported first-quarter sales of $19.1 billion, up 7.4% from last year's quarter, which had one less week. 

On a like-for-like basis, comparable-store sales for the first quarter were positive 4.3%. U.S. stores comps were positive 4.8%, also on a like-for-like basis.

Menashe, Israel-based Caesarstone Sdot-Yam, manufacturer of engineered quartz surfaces, announced that it has entered into an agreement with IKEA US as the exclusive non-laminate countertop vendor. 

Caesarstone will source, finish and distribute countertop products, including mainly Caesarstone quartz surfaces as well as other materials.

Chicago-based True Value Co. reported first-quarter gross billings of $443.3 million, down 0.9% from the same quarter last year.

A nearly non-existent spring in many parts of the country hurt sales. The company also explained gross billings were affected by a decline in lumber and building material vendor direct-ship sales.

"While winter-related product sales exceeded the prior year, the general lack of spring weather this March versus last year was too much to overcome," said Lyle Heidemann, president ad CEO.

Pittsburgh-based Versatex Trimboard has announced the availability of a 1½-in.-thick, single-extruded, cellular PVC sheet with the launch of Versatex Max.

The product is available in nominal 48-in. widths and four standard lengths; 8 ft., 12 ft., 16 ft. and 18ft. Versatex Max sheets are promoted as offerig the same tight cell structure, density, core consistency and +/- 1/32-in. thickness tolerance found in all other Versatex products, the company said.

Dallas-based pro dealer Builders FirstSource said it plans to offer $350 million of senior secured notes due in 2021. 

Also, the pro dealer intends to enter into a new revolving credit facility, expected to provide for revolving credit borrowings of up to $175.0 million.

Cary, N.C.-based Ply Gem Holdings, a manufacturer of exterior building products, announced plans to launch its initial public offering of nearly 16 million shares of its common stock. 

Ply Gem plans to use the proceeds from the public offering to pay off debt, to pay transaction fees and for general corporate purposes, according to the announcement. 

The stock has been approved for listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “PGEM.”

Peabody, Mass.-based Beacon Roofing Supply posted a second-quarter net loss of $0.2 million, compared with net income of $3.1 million in the same quarter last year.

Sales increased 5.3% to $416.3 million in the quarter.

CEO Paul Isabella described the second quarter as "challenging."

He added: "We experienced harsh weather conditions in many of our markets, and we were up against a very strong second quarter last year when our existing market sales were up 28%."

London, Ontario-based Chalifour Canada will be relocating its Vancouver distribution center to a modern industrial park in nearby Delta, British Columbia. 

Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2014.

Chalifour is a hardware wholesaler owned by TIM-BR Marts. It also supports Ace dealers in Canada.

The organizers of the National Hardware Show acquired the Expo Nacional Ferretera, an annual hardware event in Guadalajara.

Reed Exhibitions, the company that organizes the National Hardware Show, acquired Expo Nacional Ferretera, an annual event in Guadalajara, Mexico, serving the hardware, construction and electrical markets.

Expo Nacional Ferretera, described as the largest event in Mexico and Latin America, brings with it more than 1,300 exhibiting companies occupying 50,000 square meters and 80,000 buyers from 30 countries who attend the annual event in Guadalajara.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Grumpy Joe's is among the retailers on the hunt for big brands and domestically made products.

Joe McLaughlin, owner of Grumpy Joe's, responded quickly when asked what was on his shopping list at the National Hardware Show, which runs through Thursday here at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

"We're here looking for big brands and American-made products," he said. "We have enough imports."
