Emery-Waterhouse CEO Steve Frawley anticipates changes now that Ace Hardware has acquired the 170-year-old regional wholesale distributor. Some will be subtle, some substantial, and some as yet unknown. 

The deal, terms of which were not revealed, also marks the beginning of a separation between Portland, Maine-based Emery and Distribution America, the co-operative of nine regional distributors that pool together as a buying group.

Horizon Distribution, recognized by Denver-based PRO Group as the “Farm Mart Distributor of the Year,” says one of the keys to high performance is constant vigilance. 

“I think we just listen to our customers and try to fill their needs,” said Mike Dawson, retail division manager for Yakima, Wash.-based Horizon. “We try to provide them with ideas on how to move forward, whether its marketing, inventory control or new products.”

Marco Island, Fla. -- George Hebert, president of Providence, R.I.-based Blackstone Supply Co., received the PRO Leadership Award during a luncheon ceremony. 

Steve Synnott, CEO and president of PRO Group, presented the award to Hebert during the Distribution America and PRO Group Executive Planning Conference here at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort.  

Synnott described Hebert as an executive with a "zest for change" and a vision for the future.

Marco Island, Fla. -- Home improvement product buyers and sellers are taking care of business here at the 10th annual PRO Group and Distribution America Executive Planning Conference.

The event brings together the nation’s top suppliers and distributors serving the independent home improvement industry. Event organizers calculate that a total of 2,791 business meetings will take place over two days, with each distributor conducting one-on-one meetings with key manufacturers.

Attendance is up, and so is optimism, organizers said.

This year's Executive Planning Conference, hosted by Distribution America and PRO Group, will be taking place Nov. 13-15 at the Marco Island Marriott Resort & Spa in Florida.

The event, which profers networking and sales opportunities to home improvement vendors and dealers, will be aimed at leveraging the anticipated growth opportunities that many are forecasting for the end of 2013.

Distribution America and the PRO Group met for their Executive Planning Conference Nov. 12 to 14 in Tucson, Ariz., to discuss new product lines, program launches and business opportunities. More than 400 distributors and manufacturers were in attendance, and almost 2,800 scheduled meetings were held between buyers and sellers.

Orgill, Distribution America, Ace Hardware, True Value and Lancaster make up the list of co-ops/distributors signed up for the new Buying Desk Program so far, according to organizers of the National Hardware Show.

Independent retailers attending the May 10-12 event in Las Vegas will have instant access to new products introduced at the event  through the show’s new Buying Desk Program. On the flip side, suppliers attending the 2011 event will be able to sell products to independent retailers through their existing co-operative and distributor programs.
