General Tools & Instruments, a Manhattan-based tool manufacturer with a storied history, has been acquired by private equity firm High Road Capital Partners.

Founded in 1922, General Tools & Instruments is a designer and developer of precision specialty hand tools and handheld test instruments for consumers and professionals.

Houston -- Retailers were privy to a number of below-manufacturing-cost "Power Buys" at the Ace 2014 Spring Convention & Exhibits, with the potential for added profit that "can pay for a couple of people to come to Houston," said general merchandise manager Frank Carroll at the opening General Session.

"The mindset here is a 'thank you'," he added. "Thank you for coming to Houston."

Houston -- Ace executives took the stage to deliver rousing speeches at the General Session of the Ace 2014 Spring Convention & Exhibits, congratulating retailers on a strong 2013 and outlining the co-op's vision for 2014 and beyond.

Ace even had a proprietary rock 'n' roll theme song dedicated to its strategic initiative, "20/20 Vision," which added a spirited component to a slide show presented at the session. "The view is worth the climb," crooned the singer.

New York City-based General Tools & Instruments’ Predator line of Thermal Imaging Cameras is expanding to include nine extended temperature range models. General’s GTi10, GTi20 and GTi50 are now available in models with temperature measurement ranges up to 600 degrees Celcius, 1,000 degrees Celcius, and 1,500 degrees Celcius.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based co-op Ace Hardware kicks off its three-day Fall Convention and Exhibits Tuesday morning with an early morning General Session at the Orange County Convention Center.  

The event organizers say they expect more than 5,000 Ace retailers from all 50 states and 73 countries to attend. 

In addition to buying and networking on the convention floor, the event’s retailer training sessions run the gamut from strategies to remove unproductive inventory to prevent shoplifting and to increase retail space productivity.

Hyken is author of “Amaze Every Customer Every Time,” an analysis and case study of Ace Hardware stores. During the General Session of the Ace Hardware Fall Convention & Exhibits here at the Orange County Convention Center, Hyken pointed to tools retailers can use to beat the competition at customer service.

Barbara Kux has been appointed as a member of the Supervisory Board of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA.

A member of the management board of Siemens AG and its chief sustainability officer, Kux takes the place of Thierry Paternot who, for personal reasons, resigned his tenure at the beginning of the year. 

Kux will be nominated for by-election as a shareholder representative on the supervisory board at the next Annual General Meeting in April 2014.

Too many contractors taking on too much low-bid work just to stay alive may soon result in a market shake-out, according to a report by FMI, a leading provider of management consulting and investment banking to the engineering and construction industry.

FMI’s third-quarter nonresidential construction report index has dropped 5 points, putting it back at second-quarter 2010 levels. On the rise is the number of contractors participating in self-funded projects as a financing partner with owner/developers, the report said.

Denver -- The air was thick with sports metaphors during Ace Hardware's General Session of the 2011 Denver Fall Convention & Exhibits. 

Ace's top marketing and merchandising executives mixed retail strategies with quotes from Knute Rockne and Vince Lombardi during a presentation in which they described the top 10 plays for winning at retail. The session even included half-time highlights of power tools and football touchdowns.

Denver -- Ace Hardware stores are showing strong same-store sales, while the distributor's wholesale sales are running ahead of the budgeted 3% growth, CEO Ray Griffith told dealers.

Speaking Saturday morning at the General Session of the co-op's 2011 Convention & Exhibits here at the Colorado Convention Center, Griffith said data from about 3,000 Ace stores show a 2.4% comparable-store sales increase over last year. In each of the last four months, the stores showed comp-sales increases of more than 4%.

Canadian-based wood products company West Fraser has announced it will sell its Eurocan site in Kitimat, B.C., and related assets to KM LNG Operating General Partnership. The completion of the sale is expected later in 2011.

“Further to the earlier agreement to sell the wharf to Rio Tinto Alcan Inc., we are pleased to announce the sale of the site to KM LNG, an industrial consortium led by Apache Canada Ltd,” said Hank Ketcham, West Fraser’s chairman, president and CEO.
