An article in Delmarvanow.com reports that a procurement policy for Eastern Correctional Institution in Maryland is cutting out the local hardware store.

In an blow to the buy-local movement, an Ace dealer in Princess Anne, Md., was told that Eastern Correctional Institution is handcuffed into buying from national supplier W.W. Grainger.

Ace Hardware, BEHR, Generac Power Systems and Grainger are on the list of 319 large companies have been deemed as a “Top Workplace” by WorkplaceDynamics, a research firm.

The results were based on a survey of more than 4,000 companies with 1,000 or more employees. Topping the list: Container Store.

W.W. Grainger reported record sales and earnings for the year ended Dec. 31, the Chicago-based industrial supply company announced Wednesday morning.

The full year 2011 sales of $8.1 billion were up 12% compared to $7.2 billion in 2010. Net earnings of $658 million increased 29% over the prior year.
