And according to a national survey from Broan-NuTone and Kelton, 9 in 10 homeowners realize poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can contribute to certain health issues, yet only one-quarter of Americans are worried about the air quality in their homes.

“As you likely know, the federal government has lamp efficiency regulations that ban the incandescent. And as you likely know, the federal government has set light bulb regulations that eliminate the incandescent lamps that we grew up with.

"Rough service bulbs are a loophole in the law.

The American Wood Council CEO Robert Glowinski said the AWC is hopeful about a plan to harmonize green building standards.

In a statement issued Thursday, Glowinski said:

“The American Wood Council is hopeful about the recently announced strategy to harmonize ASHRAE 189.1, IgCC and LEED into a standardized tool. While the streamlining strategy presented is encouraging, its success will depend on whether the leadership of the organizations provides the direction necessary to carry-out the coordination as envisioned.

A grant agreement between the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and Chinese company Midea will see Honeywell work to reduce the impact Midea's refrigerators and freezers have on the environment.

Honeywell will work with Midea, which manufactures appliances, to put its line of Solstice products into wider use. The main Solstice product that Midea will use is Honeywell's Liquid Blowing Agent, which expands insulation in appliances and has a lower global warming potential than more widely-used agents.

East Cleveland, Ohio-based GE Lighting says it has introduced its most incandescent-like consumer LED portfolio yet, including more than 40 new LED products and fixtures.

The company also says it is helping the homeowner fill every socket in the house with the appropriate, low-energy bulb.

GE is behind the latest eco-forward move in San Francisco -- specifically, that of the iconic 16-ft. crab wheel at the gateway of Fisherman's Wharf.

Together with the Arrow Sign Company, GE helped restore the landmark with new LED sign lighting systems that will save an estimated 80% in lighting energy usage.

The Home Depot has launched a nationwide campaign to bring water conservation savvy to the masses, especially those in drought-affected areas.

On April 26, the retailer will hold free Water Conservation Workshops at all 1,977 of its U.S. locations, where attendees can learn ten different strategies for saving water.

These projects include converting to a dual-flush toilet, switching to EPA WaterSense labeled showerheads and faucets, installing drip irrigation and rotary nozzle or dual spray sprinklers and more.

The Home Depot has earned a 2014 Energy Star Partner of the Year -- Sustained Excellence award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which cited its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the promotion of energy-efficient products.

"Our customers are increasingly looking for products that have earned the Energy Star," said Ron Jarvis, VP Environmental. "Our partnership with Energy Star allows us to offer our customers high quality, energy-efficient products that will also save them money on their energy bills."

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Panasonic Eco Solutions North America as a 2014 Energy Star Partner of the Year -- Sustained Excellence Award.

Panasonic's energy-efficient ventilation fans are the star of the day, which Panasonic assures will meet designed airflow requirements when installed, providing ventilation verification assurance. At up to 23.3 CFM/Watt, the fans have the highest efficacy of any Energy Star-rated ventilation fan.

Honeywell has announced that its full line of Wi-Fi thermostats will enable homeowners to connect with their utility and receive incentives for cutting down on electricity use. 

"The same technology people purchase today to lower their heating bills can pay extra dividends in the summer months," said Tony Uttley, general manager of Home Comfort and Energy Systems at Honeywell. "Honeywell can easily link homeowners to these additional savings."

IKEA is taking a big step in pushing solar panels further toward the mainstream through the launch of a new test sale in Britain.

The retailer has begun selling residential solar panels in its Southampton store, with other locations in Britain due to start selling them in the coming months. IKEA has plans to eventually sell to other countries as well, though Britain was a strategic choice for a test program due to its moderate electricity costs and government incentives for promoting solar energy.

At a score of 120/89.5, the 2020 Alton home in Miami Beach, Fla., is reportedly the highest-scoring LEED home in the nation, according to CGI Windows & Doors.

The home, completed by developer Matthew Lahn of the Florida Green Home Design Group and architect Ari Sklar of Sklarchitecture, was recently awarded LEED Platinum status for its ambitious adherence to the LEED point checklist.

Solar manufacturer SolarWorld is rolling out its new Freedom Plan, designed to support the usage of American-made solar panels for homeowners in Hawaii.

In a nutshell, the program will allow homeowners to replace a portion of their electricity bills with a low monthly payment for solar power and guarantees the use of American-made panels. Users can receive the plan together with a complete solar-electric system from SolarWorld, which includes photovoltaic equipment, installation, monitoring services, system insurance and maintenance for up to 20 years.

The city of Boston has approved plans to build more energy-efficient homes after the relative success of a pilot program in Roxbury, the Boston Globe reports. 

The initial four homes, which recently went up in Dudley Square and reportedly generate almost twice as much power as they consume, will be followed up by a development of 40 similar units in Mission Hill.
