The Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) added a new member: Cleveland-based plumbing products leader Oatey Co. 

HIRI is a membership based, independent, not-for-profit organization of manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers and allied organizations in the home improvement industry. HIRI ended 2012 with 77 members.

The Home Improvement Research Institute’s (HIRI’s) September 2012 forecast for the size and trends in the home improvement market points to growth of 4.9% in 2012 and 4.0% in 2013. 

Based on the macroeconomic factors that are known to drive the industry, home improvement sales should outpace GDP growth and bring the market size to $284.8 billion in 2013.

Arlington, Va. — At last year’s Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) Spring Conference, the assembled researchers, guests and partners — all thirsty for good news — were told by Morgan Stanley analyst Ian Sugarman that the modest, pre-bubble year of 1999 is the “new normal.”


Fast-forward to this year’s event, held here at the Doubletree Crystal City, and a very similar group of attendees were told to brace for even more simulated time travel — this time to 1996.

Arlington, Va. -- The data was flying fast and furious here at the Home Improvement Research Institute's (HIRI's) Spring Conference. 

The series of seminars carried the theme "Understanding Today's Home Improvement Industry" and kicked off Wednesday morning with a detailed examination of some unpleasant and lingering macroeconomic trends. Other charts presented by the day's seven presenters picked up where last year's conference left off by establishing a worst-is-behind-us view of the home improvement industry.

The Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) will host a daylong conference Oct. 10 in Chicago, bringing into focus a range of issues—including the state of housing turnover and the impact of housing and credit markets on homeowners’ remodeling projects.

The fall conference, “Navigating a Demanding Home Improvement Industry,” will feature presenters from Home Depot, Yankelovich, NPD Group and Zelman and Associates, among others.
