Like most buildings and structures in the Philippines city of Tacloban, the mall housing Handyman’s -- a Do it Best Corp. member -- suffered significant damage from Typhoon Haiyan in November.

The mall’s roof was partially ripped away and its windows completely destroyed, allowing mud and rain to pour into the shopping center. To make matters worse, the city of Tacloban is still without power, making any efforts to clean up and re-open very difficult. Officials there expect it to take up to six months for the store to re-open in full.

The world’s largest retailer is taking steps to display its home improvement prowess through a digital marketing campaign centered on a “Projects Made Simple” area on Walmart.com.

The area is organized by home improvement project. For instance: how to stain a deck, install a water filter system, caulk a window or install a towel bar. In the deck video, an unidentified handyman narrator explains, “All the tools are available at Walmart to get you going.”

Both kitchen and bathroom renovations have increased 17% from two years ago, according to a survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), with bathroom remodels cited as a common job by 78% of remodelers and kitchen remodels at 69%. Since 2009, bathrooms and kitchens have switched places in popularity, with bathroom remodels moving into the top spot as the most common type of remodeling project.

Tool brand Craftsman is engaged in an online search for a handyman to transform from rank beginner to respected DIYer.

The online "Handyman in Training" contest employs elements of social media. Contestants' audition videos are stored at the Craftsman YouTube channel. And Craftsman's fans on Facebook will eventually be allowed to play along, offering advice during the actual training of handyman.
