The Home Depot is the latest major retailer to investigate what looks like a data breach. 

The Atlanta-based retailer is looking into the matter and also working with law enforcement and bank investigators. 

"Protecting our customers' information is something we take extremely seriously, and we are aggressively gathering facts at this point while working to protect customers,” the retailer said in a statement.

America’s older population is in the midst of unprecedented growth, but the country is not prepared to meet the housing needs of this aging group, concludes a new report released today by the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies and AARP Foundation. According to Housing America’s Older Adults—Meeting the Needs of An Aging Population, the number of adults in the U.S. aged 50 and over is expected to grow to 132 million by 2030, an increase of more than 70 percent since 2000.

Herndon, Virginia-based Beacon Roofing Supply has acquired All Weather Products Ltd., a Vancouver-based distributor of roofing systems and accessories primarily for residential applications.

The release of the new Dremel Micro 8050 is being hailed as more than just a run-of-the-mill product launch. According to the Mount Prospect, Illinois-based company, the 8050 is "the most powerful and precise compact cordless rotary tool Dremel has yet to produce."

"The Micro 8050 represents a new evolution in the rotary tool category that offers precise control with surprising power," said Ed Pchola, product director for Dremel. "It fills a need for a multifunctional tool for people who engage in hands-on, detailed activities."

Houston-based hardware distributor Handy Hardware named Brian Sarno as VP sales.

Sarno’s past experience includes positions at Interline Brands and W.W. Granger. According to the company, Sarno has deep experience in the wholesale and distribution industries. 

The company made the announcement at its recent Fall Market in San Antonio.

A Marin County California judge ordered Mooresville, North Carolina-based Lowe’s to pay a $1.6 million settlement over a lawsuit alleging the inaccurate description of structural dimensional building products.

One upshot of the settlement is the intention of Lowe’s to include the actual product dimensions of 2x4 lumber (1.5 inches by 3.5 inches) along with the description of the product as a “2x4.”

Orscheln Farm and Home, the third largest farm-and-ranch retailer on the HCN Top 300 Scoreboard, is planning a new location in Trumann, Arkansas, according to an article in the Poinsett County Democrat.

Construction will begin in the next few weeks, according to the article. A similar-sized Orscheln Farm and Home is currently under construction in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Moberly, Missouri-based Orscheln ended last year with 158 units.

The Home Improvement Research Institute announced the hiring of Pam Heidel as research analyst based in HIRI’s Tampa office. 

Heidel is a former president of the board of the non-profit HIRI. Also, from 2007 to 2014, she was employed by Generac Power Systems, most recently as marketing director – digital and consumer insights. 

Heidel also worked as marketing planning manager for Broan-NuTone from 2000 through 2007.

Using the new service, PRO Group retail members will be able to access on-demand vendor information.

Representatives of the seven associations shared information on membership initiatives under way and touched upon key issues impacting their membership, according to the organization.

The group is preparing for its 13th annual meeting to be held Feb. 26, 2015, at The Rental Show in New Orleans.

Prior to joining Tractor Supply Company, Frazell was senior VP, human resources for Shopko Stores. From 2008 to 2011, he served as VP, human resources for Kohl's Corporation, where he began as a store manager in 1999. Prior to 1999, Mr. Frazell served as a store manager and assistant manager for Target Corporation. He began his career with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., where he served as an assistant manager and sales associate.

Lenexa, Kansas-based Westlake Ace Hardware’s summer fan drive to benefit the elderly generated some $30,000 worth of cooling equipment. 

The retailer partnered with The Salvation Army for the drive July 17 to Aug. 3. More than $30,000 was donated, equating to more than 2,000 fans donated -- at cost -- to The Salvation Army.

Ace Hardware Corporation has employed the wares of Digital Lumens in upgrading the lighting of its 1-million-sq.-ft. Retail Support Center in Rocklin, California.

The facility has been outfitted in Digital Lumens Intelligent LED Lighting since October 2013, saving Ace an average of 81% on lighting-related energy use, the company said.

The American Wood Council CEO Robert Glowinski said the AWC is hopeful about a plan to harmonize green building standards.

In a statement issued Thursday, Glowinski said:

“The American Wood Council is hopeful about the recently announced strategy to harmonize ASHRAE 189.1, IgCC and LEED into a standardized tool. While the streamlining strategy presented is encouraging, its success will depend on whether the leadership of the organizations provides the direction necessary to carry-out the coordination as envisioned.

Metropolitan Hardwood Floors leased a 16,063-sq.-ft. distribution facility in the Minneapolis suburb of Eagan. 

Metropolitan Hardwood Floors is the exclusive distributor of Kentwood and Evoke flooring lines and also handles many other manufacturers.

It was the 15th deal that Bruininks has done with Metropolitan Hardwood Floors, totaling approximately 340,000 sq. ft.
