The story is playing out at Target, also. During a December weekend at a New Jersey store, an endcap dedicated to Wink told the story: “Smartphone, meet smart home.”

Wink bills itself as the simpler way for a smarter home. (The dot in the “i” of wink is shaped like a house.)

The coating competition will heat up in March as Lowe’s rolls out HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams.

The HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams product line will feature what both companies describe as “a new and improved interior and exterior paint program.” The line will be available at both Sherwin-Williams' company stores and Lowe's stores nationwide, as well as exclusive line extensions available at Lowe's.

Lumberyards, hardware stores and home centers fared well in the most recent government report measuring monthly retail sales.

In the month of November, NAICS 444 businesses – building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers – showed 1.4% month-to-month gains on an adjusted basis, and 7.8% gains compared to a year ago.

The last quarter was a tale of two divisions for Hoffman Estates, Illinois-based Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores, Inc.

The company's Outlet division's comparable store sales jumped 9.3%. But the more hardware-oriented Hometown stores saw comp-store sales decline 6.2%.

Overall, the 1,257 locations of Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores saw comps decline 2.3% for the quarter, in which its operating loss was $173.6 million.

Sears Holdings reported a third-quarter loss, though one not as wide as economists expected.

As the retailer has been posting months of consecutive losses and sales declines, CEO Edward Lampert stressed the steps it was taking to minimize its expenses and generate more revenue.

HD Supply and The Home Depot today announced they have entered into an agreement for The Home Depot to purchase substantially all of the assets of HD Supply Hardware Solutions, formerly known as Crown Bolt, a leading supplier of fasteners and builders hardware to retailers in the United States. 

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close by the end of fiscal year 2014 subject to obtaining customary regulatory approvals.

Home decor retailer At Home has donated $150,440 to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which will go toward blood cancer research and increasing access to treatments.

The donation marks what the retailer called a "successful inaugural year" of its partnership with LLS, during which At Home stores collected donations at check-out registers.

At Home also sponsored the LLS' Light The Night Walks in several cities. The walks are meant to honor blood cancer survivors and victims, as well as bring attention to the need for research and better treatments.

Lowe's Canada will open three new stores in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario, the company announced. 

Lowe's opened its first Canadian stores in December 2007 and now operates 37 stores in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia

Lowe's has bestowed Valspar with an Innovative Partner of the Year Award, owing to the introduction of its Valspar Reserve paint product.

The award, which typically goes to a number of Lowe's vendor partners who have made significant strides in product development, recognized Valspar Reserve's HydroChroma coloring system.

All 14 regions of the Lowe’s empire achieved positive comp-store sales in the third quarter as the company remains “cautiously optimistic about the home improvement landscape.” 

Top sellers at Lowe’s in the period that saw 5.1% comp-store sales: outdoor power equipment, with double-digit comps, said Michael Jones, chief customer officer for the Mooresville, North Carolina-based retail giant.

Lowe's has expanded its Iris smart-home offerings with the addition of the Smart Valve by Waxman, an automatic water shut-off valve that protects homes from flooding.

Here's how it works: the Smart Valve connects to water leak detectors and temperature sensors, automatically shutting off the water supply in the case of a leak or temperatures low enough to cause pipes to freeze.

Mohawk is recalling its Altitude Gold shag rugs that are sold exclusively at Home Depot, citing a failure to meet federal flammability standards.

Specifically, the rugs do not meet federal labeling standards, which require rugs to have the following statement on a permanent lablel: “FLAMMABLE (FAILS U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE STANDARD FF 2-70): SHOULD NOT BE USED NEAR SOURCES OF IGNITION.”

Highlights of the Home Depot fourth-quarter merchandise lineup include a remote-controlled, pre-lit Christmas tree that shines in 56 light and color options. The season will also bring stocking stuffers like carbide-tipped reciprocal saw blades from Diablo and 21 new Kohler SKUs.

"We look forward to driving excitement this holiday season," said Ted Decker, executive VP merchandising, during the Atlanta-based retailer's third-quarter earnings call.

Lowe's is raising its full-year outlook on the strength of its third-quarter performance, which has exceeded expectations on Wall Street.

Fiscal 2014 guidance now pegs sales at an increase of 4.5% to 5%; comparable sales up 3.5% to 4%; a total of 10 new locations; and diluted earnings per share of $2.68 for the fiscal year ending Jan. 30, 2015.

Another quarter, another billion-and-a half dollars in earnings for the world’s largest home improvement retailer.

In spite of a widespread data breach and with a new CEO at the helm, the Home Depot reported sales of $20.5 billion for the third quarter of fiscal 2014, a 5.4% increase from the third quarter of fiscal 2013. Comparable store sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2014 were positive 5.2%, and comp sales for U.S. stores were positive 5.8%.

Lowe's has brought back Ross McCanless to fill the role of general counsel, secretary and chief compliance officer, effective Jan. 12, 2015. 

McCanless previously held the legal role at Lowe's from 2003 to 2006. Since then, he went on to serve as chief legal officer, general counsel and secretary for Extended Stay America, Inc. and ESH Hospitality, Inc.

In his new position with Lowe's, he will be responsible for the company's legal matters, as well as advising the chairman and board of directors on corporate governance.

Leeds, Alabama-based Marvin’s Building Materials and Home Centers is adding to its fleet of mid-sized home centers that serve the Southern home builder and the homeowner.

The store in Ozark, Alabama, is currently under construction and is expected to open in the spring of 2015. When completed, the Alabama chain will operate 28 stores. The store will feature a 30,000-sq.-ft. home center in addition to an attached lawn and garden center and drive-through lumberyard.

Home Depot’s efforts to court loyalty among its pro customers now includes a special Black Friday showcase.

The Atlanta-based retailer will showcase its pre-Black Friday savings for Pro customers at Pro Appreciation Events Nov. 20 at all U.S. stores. The company says pros will have access to exclusive pre-Black Friday savings on products from brands including DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, RIDGID and Porter-Cable.

The event is part of a quarterly commitment by the retailer to honor its Pro customers, which make up 40% of its business.

Lowe's Companies has named its 2014 Vendor Partners of the Year, selected for their commitment to product quality, innovation and customer service: 3M, Stainmaster and Truper.

It also named MTD its 2014 Innovation Partner of the Year due to its launch of the Troy-Bilt JET Leaf Blower, which uses Air Amplified Technology to create 650 CFM of air volume for greater control over debris.
