The launch of a bilingual pro-contractor magazine has Home Depot’s VP pro business seeing opportunity to reach more customers.

The magazine -- Pro Construction Guide/Constru-Guia al dia -- is described as the first fully bilingual pro-targeted magazine in the U.S. It will be available for free in about 2,000 Home Depot stores.

The Home Depot has earned a 2014 Energy Star Partner of the Year -- Sustained Excellence award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which cited its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the promotion of energy-efficient products.

"Our customers are increasingly looking for products that have earned the Energy Star," said Ron Jarvis, VP Environmental. "Our partnership with Energy Star allows us to offer our customers high quality, energy-efficient products that will also save them money on their energy bills."

Former Home Depot executive Troy Rice has joined Office Depot as EVP retail as the office products company continues to build out its senior leadership team in the wake of its merger with OfficeMax.

Rice replaces Juan Guerrero and will report directly to Roland Smith, chairman and CEO of Office Depot.

Home Depot's 11-day savings event known as Spring Black Friday is back with a twist this year -- organizers have taken steps to include the pro customers. 

This year's Spring Black Friday event, which kicked off April 3 and marks the beginning of the home improvement industry's busiest season, will have sales on  grills, lawn supplies and gardening products as usual. But it will also include power tools, nailers/compressors, concrete, ladders and landscape timber.

The Home Depot is announcing the nomination of Wayne Hewett for election to its board of directors during its 2014 annual meeting of shareholders.

Bonnie Hill, the board's lead director, will not stand for re-election; the company's corporate governance guidelines require directors to retire upon reaching the age of 72 by the end of the calendar year preceding the annual meeting. Gregory Brenneman has been selected to succeed her as lead director.

Thompson is introducing a brand new line of deck stains. Going by the name of WaterSeal, the new waterproofing stains are now available exclusively at The Home Depot.

P&F Industries, Inc. reported a strong finish to the full-year period ended Dec. 31, 2013, with an especially large boost in Tools revenue that the company attributes to its entry into The Home Depot.

"Our consolidated 2013 revenue increased 27.0% when compared to 2012's revenue," said chairman, CEO and president Richard Horowitz.

For the three-month period ended Dec. 31, revenue was $15.4 million, up 21.3% year-over-year. Income for the quarter was $919,000, more than double that of the same period a year before.

The Home Depot Foundation has awarded a $7,000 grant to San Diego's Veterans Community Services (VCS) for a community renovation project at their main office.

Veterans, Team Depot and VCS volunteers will paint walls, replace doors and build shelving units on February 27, preparing the space to host meetings and supportive services programs, as well as serve as a donation center.

VCS provides various services to low-income veterans, including rapid rehousing, homelessness prevention, counseling, financial planning, employment search and referrals, and other aid.

Even as winter's grip tightens over much of the country, The Home Depot has begun filling open positions for its peak spring hiring season. This year, the retailer plans to add 80,000 new employees to its payroll.

"Spring is our peak hiring season, giving us the opportunity to find some of the best associates who are passionate about customer service," said Tim Crow, EVP Human Resources.

Home Depot is encouraging college students, retirees, veterans and reservists to apply.

The Home Depot opened its new direct fulfillment center (DFC) in Locust Grove, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta.

The facility is the first of three new DFCs the company will open across the U.S. over the next two years. The new distribution centers will increase the number of orders the company can ship the day they are received, increasing the speed of delivery for HomeDepot.com orders. The company also said they will enable faster order picking and shipping through new warehouse management and material handling systems.

Durham, N.C.-based Cree, maker of LED technology and products, including a $10 LED bulb found at Home Depot, reported a 20% increase in second-quarter sales.

The company's revenues of $415.1 million were up from $346.3 million in the year-ago quarter. Net income for the second quarter, ended Dec. 29, was $35.7 million, up 75% from last year's second quarter.

The Home Depot opened a new store in Minot, N.D., one of only a handful of new store openings in the United States for the world's largest home improvement retailer in recent years.

The 104,000-sq.-ft. store with a 17,000-sq.-ft. garden center also operates an outdoor lumberyard measuring 96,000 sq. ft. 

The store is the second Home Depot in North Dakota, the other being in Fargo, about four hours away. In the United States, the new store brings the Home Depot store count to 1,978, according to the store count stats on the company's website.

RSI is recalling four models of Glacier Bay-branded bathroom medicine cabinets, sold exclusively at Home Depot between August and October of 2013.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the mirror on the back panel has demonstrated a tendency to fall out, posing an injury risk to consumers.

There have been two reported incidents of the mirror detaching and falling out, though no injuries have been reported.

The Home Depot reaffirmed its fiscal guidance for 2013, as well as updated its 2014 financial outlook, wherein the company now expects to meet a 2015 profitability goal a year earlier than expected.

The company had originally announced an operating margin goal of 12% in June 2012, as well as a 24% reutn on invested capital goal, for the end of fiscal 2015. According to the statement released Wednesday, Home Depot expects to reach these benchmarks by the end of fiscal 2014.
