An industry veteran and former top merchandising executive at Handy Hardware, Mickey Schulte resigned last week to take a position outside the hardware industry.

Schulte had been a key figure at the Houston-based distributor and served during the company’s growth years, its bankruptcy and its subsequent reorganization.

Houston -- Retailers were privy to a number of below-manufacturing-cost "Power Buys" at the Ace 2014 Spring Convention & Exhibits, with the potential for added profit that "can pay for a couple of people to come to Houston," said general merchandise manager Frank Carroll at the opening General Session.

Houston -- Ace executives took the stage to deliver rousing speeches at the General Session of the Ace 2014 Spring Convention & Exhibits, congratulating retailers on a strong 2013 and outlining the co-op's vision for 2014 and beyond.

Ace even had a proprietary rock 'n' roll theme song dedicated to its strategic initiative, "20/20 Vision," which added a spirited component to a slide show presented at the session. "The view is worth the climb," crooned the singer.

Houston-area Braun's Roofing has recently started offering its customers the option to install CertainTeed cool roofs, designed with shingles that deflect the sun's rays and reduces energy costs in the summer.

While typical shingles absorb heat, CertainTeed products aim to do the opposite, which keeps buildings cooler and reduces the strain on overworked HVAC systems.

Greenwhich, Conn.-based Littlejohn & Co. received court approval to acquire Houston-based Handy Hardware Wholesale out of bankruptcy.

Doug Miller, former president of Jensen Distribution, will take over as interim CEO of Handy Hardware. 

"This is an important milestone for the future growth of Handy Hardware and I am pleased to lead this organization, which has enjoyed outstanding support and loyalty from its members and industry partners," Miller said.

Houston-based Quanex Building Products has announced the appointments of Dewayne Williams and Martin P. Ketelaar as corporate officers.

Williams was named VP and corporate controller, effective July 1. He will be responsible for all internal and external financial accounting and reporting functions. Handy Hardware Wholesale, the Houston-based co-op that filed for bankruptcy protection in January, announced that Littlejohn Management Holdings has agreed to acquire Handy.

Littlejohn is a Connecticut-based private equity firm with substantial holdings in the wholesale distribution business and the hardware industry. The company's website includes Howard Berger Co. and Installed Building Products among its portfolio.

Handy Hardware Wholesale, which filed for bankruptcy protection in January, eliminated the position of “senior director, retail development,” as part of a cost-reduction plan, according to Morrie Aaron, president of MCA Financial Group. MCA is Handy’s financial advisory firm that specializes in restructuring.

The Houston-based hardware co-op that filed for bankruptcy protection in January says it has received “expressions of interest from third parties.”

Houston-based Handy Hardware Wholesale has received acquisition overtures, according to a memo to dealers from the co-op’s board of directors. 

No formal offers have been made, and none was solicited, the board said in the March 28 letter obtained by HCN. Handy did not immediately respond to an HCN request to reveal the identity of the two companies that made overtures.

Handy filed for bankruptcy protection in January and submitted a plan for reorganization in March.
