When it comes to ice melt products, fall can be a missed opportunity for hardware and home retailers. Many retailers figure that all salt is the same, so they stock a few kinds of basic ice melt products to arm homeowners for winter. And most homeowners wait for the first snowfall and then grab the first bag of ice melt they see on a retailer’s shelf.

Schenectady, N.Y.-based Marty’s True Value has seen a boost in its business due to the increased snowfall in the Northeast this winter, according to the Times Union.

The retailer has seen sales in salt, shovels and scrapers grow exponentially, and has generated a lot of revenue from its snow blower repair services as well.

Brillion, Wis.-based Ariens Co., a manufacturer of snow and gardening vehicles, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, announced the recall of approximately 1,040 snow throwers due to an injury hazard.

The company is recalling its SnoThro 30LE deluxe snow thrower, model number 921020, because of a hand or finger injury hazard posed while clearing the collector or discharge chute. The machine was sold at The Home Depot and Ariens retail locations since October.
