Buffalo Grove, Ill.-based Hines Supply, which announced two expansions in the last week, has announced another.

Mike’s Deck Centers in Montgomery and St. Charles, Ill will join Hines, a division of U.S. LBM.

Acquisition-oriented US LBM is at it again, this time with an expansion in Wisconsin.

Following on the heels of two new Hines openings in Northern Illinois, US LBM’s Wisconsin Building Supply subsidiary announced the opening of two new locations in the Fond du Lac area.

Buffalo Grove, Ill.-based Hines Supply, a subsidiary of US LBM, announced its newest northern Illinois location -- Builder’s Roofing & Siding Supply of Warrenville.

Founded in 1967 by Henry Pelletier, Builder’s Roofing & Siding Supply is a wholesale distributor and supplier of roofing, siding and windows serving Chicago and its western suburbs. Grandsons Brian, Mark and Scott Pelletier will remain with the company.

Hines Supply, a subsidiary of US LBM, has opened a full-service building supply center and design showroom in Grayslake, Ill., north of Chicago.

The location, at 939 South Route 83 in Grayslake, is celebrating its grand opening today. It will be managed by 30-year industry veteran Ed Graafsma.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corporation is hoping to gain a sales and marketing boost from its 90th anniversary.

To commemorate the occasion, Ace is hosting a nationwide promotion April 2-7, during which time customers can get 20% off gallons of Clark+Kensington paint+primer in one, as well as special offers on a variety of lawn, garden and outdoor living items. Some home maintenance products will also be priced at 90 cents in honor of the milestone.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corporation, the industry’s largest retailer-owned hardware cooperative, recognized Les Orchekowsky of Sierra Vista, Ariz., with Ace’s first-ever Ray A. Griffith Retail Leadership Award.

Named after Ace’s former CEO Ray A. Griffith who retired in March 2013, the award will be given annually to the Ace retailer that most personifies Griffith’s outstanding leadership traits and exemplifies Ace’s core values.

Lincolnshire, Ill.-based Klein Tools introduced a new Cushion-Grip Impact Punchdown Tool and Blade. 

Marking an expansion of the company’s Voice/Data/Vido punchdown tool line, the  Dura-Blade is a newly designed metal injection molded punchdown blade designed to deliver long-lasting cutting performance.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware Corp. reported total fiscal 2013 revenues of $4.2 billion, an increase of 8.2% over the previous year.

“2013 was a record year for the company," said John Venhuizen, Ace president and CEO. “We outperformed our operating plan, exceeding $4 billion in consolidated revenues and $100 million in net income for the first time in our history.”

The outlook for home repair and remodeling is fueling Fortune Brands Home & Security’s optimism for 2014. 

The Deerfield, Ill.-based multi-purpose home product company reported fourth-quarter sales of $1.10 billion, up 16% from the same quarter last year. Net income was $64.6 million, up from $18.6 million in last year’s quarter.

Cranbury, N.J.-based HBC Home & Hardware Products, the home products distributor formerly known as Howard Berger Co., has acquired the assets of Faucet Queen.

Faucet Queen’s Helping Hand brand of convenience-oriented home hardware is the market leader in serving the food and drug retail trade, the company said. The Faucet Queen business will continue to operate out of the current Vernon Hills, Ill., facility.

Gurnee, Ill.-based Weiman Products, maker of specialty cleaning products, announced the acquisition of several brands formerly under the umbrella of The Homax Group.

The acquisition brings Weiman the following brands: Goo Gone, Magic, Stone Care International, natural Magic, OOPS! Paint Remover and Gonzo.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware appointed a new chief for Westlake Ace Hardware, the 85-store Midwestern chain.

Tom Knox, 59, was named president and CEO of Westlake, which is owned by the co-op -- and which is also the co-op's largest member. Knox wil be leaving his role as VP retail business development, training and supply at Ace's corporate offices and take on his new role in Lenexa, Kan.

Repeating the new tradition it established last year, Naperville, Ill.-based Opal Enterprises is engaging in a bit of a holiday bake-off for local charities.

The roofing contracting company baked 140 dozen cookies on Dec. 21, which were then giftwrapped for delivery to Childserve in Naperville, Ronald McDonald Family Room at Naperville's Edward Hospital, 360 Youth Services in the Lisle/Naperville area and Family Shelter Services in Downers Grove.

IKEA said this week that it is submitting plans for a St. Louis, Mo., store.

The application marks the beginning of the governmental approval process, which is expected to lead to the opening sometime in fall 2015. The closest IKEA stores to the proposal are the Chicago-area stores in Bolingbrook, Ill., and Schaumburg, Ill. Additionally, a Kansas City-area store is under construction and on track to open fall 2014 in Merriam, Kan.

Lisa Marquis Jackson, SVP at John Burns Real Estate Consulting, provided a comprehensive perspective on the state of the housing recovery at the 2013 Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) Fall Conference in Rosemont, Ill. on Oct. 16.

In her presentation, titled "Clarity on the Housing Recovery," Jackson highlighted strong national housing fundamentals and pointed out that though housing starts are less than half of the way toward a full recovery, existing-home sales have already rebounded and then some, thanks in part to activity in the distressed housing market.

Sears Holdings Corp. announced its plan to host its first-ever Invite a Veteran to Work Day on Nov. 6. The event will take place at its headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill., as well as 1,800 other Sears and Kmart locations across the nation.

The event is designed to honor vets, provide them with an educational tour of the company's operations and offer support for transitioning into the civilian workforce. Additionally, attendees will be encouraged to apply for various career opportunities with Sears.

Oak Brook, Ill.-based Ace Hardware has retooled the packaging for its builders hardware department.

According to Cynthia Brasic, Ace brand manager, the new color-coded labels help make the selection process easier for the consumer. It’s the first packaging makeover in the co-op’s builders hardware aisle in about 20 years, she said.
