“We’ve identified a gap within the marking and layout tools category,” said Ross Porter, president of Irwin Tools. “Our Live Product Search challenges everyday consumers to help us bridge that gap by taking the standard tape measuring device to a new level.”

To complement the baseball theme of its Grand Slam Power Challenge promotion at the National Hardware Show last month, Briggs & Stratton presented its catalog in the form of baseball cards. It featured a portrait of the product on the front, with stats and information on the back.


“We thought our customers might find them a bit more interesting and handy than a product catalog,” said Eric Loferski, director of marketing of Briggs & Stratton’s portable power and cleaning systems.


The idea may be catching on.

Las Vegas -- Thirty-two home channel industry suppliers were recognized as Golden Hammer winners during a ceremony Wednesday in Las Vegas at the National Hardware Show.

The event also produced five vendor winners selected by the Golden Hammer retail committee in five retail disciplines. The Golden Hammer Committee Choice winners for 2011 are:

Bristol, Tenn. -- A carpenter from Halifax, England, outlasted some 16,000 tradesmen to win $10,000 in the finals of a tradesman skills competition held at the Bristol Motor Speedway during race day on Sunday. 

The event was part of a larger campaign by Irwin Tools to elevate and support the often underappreciated tradesman, according to organizers. "Tradesmen keep America running strong, and this is our way of saying thanks for what they do for our country," said Curt Rahilly, VP marketing for Irwin Tools.

Irwin Tools, a leading maker of hand tools and power tool accessories based in Huntersville, N.C., has named Ross Porter as its new president. Porter has held a variety of positions during his 18 years at Newell Rubbermaid, Irwin’s parent company. He most recently served as president of EMEA Transformation, where Porter led the company’s European transformation efforts, including implementation of a new European business model, integration and implementation of SAP enterprise system, and relocation of its European headquarters.
