With California’s controversial “lumber assessment” now being assessed on most lumber products sold in the state under so-called “emergency” regulations from the state’s tax collection agency, the State Board of Equalization (BOE), the next process for the state agency is to develop permanent rules including a permanent retailer set-up reimbursement.

A proposed 1% additional sales tax on selected lumber products that was part of Governor Jerry Brown’s attempt to close a state budget gap has been dropped, much to the relief of California LBM dealers. The tax pitted retail lumber sellers against lumber producers by shifting fees the timber industry currently pays to its customers.

San Francisco -- Gov. Jerry Brown, mired in the biggest battle of his new term as governor of California, took time to stop in at the PCBC show here to deliver a keynote address that touched lightly on housing but staked out his determination to pass a balanced budget for the nation’s largest state.

“We must continue to retrench, but it’s going to get ugly,” Brown said.
