KB Home is launching a pilot program for a set of new energy storage solutions, developed in collaboration with SunPower Corp., in its Irvine, El Dorado Hills and San Diego markets.

The Roseville, California, facility is described as a retail-like showroom where home shoppers can explore design choices, energy-efficient features and sophisticated home automation technologies.

Roseville is also home to two new KB Home communities, Aria and Legato at Westpark, which both celebrated grand openings this spring.

KB Home celebrated the grand opening of its new KB Home Design Studio on Friday in the D.C. metro area. The showroom takes its cues from retail stores and gives would-be homeowners the opportunity to see and touch their  custom options up close.

Among the features on display are design choices for flooring lighting, cabinetry, appliances, energy-efficient features and home automation technologies. Bath fixture and lighting displays, as well as life-size kitchen vignettes, help bring options to their proper scale and visibility.

KB Home posted a strong first quarter in 2014, with revenues up 11% and positive net income that swung from a 2013 first-quarter loss.

Sales for the three months ended Feb. 28 were $450.7 million, up from $405.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

The increase was fueled by activity in the Southwest and Southeast regions and was offset by a decrease in the West Coast area. Additionally, the average selling price rose 12% since last year.

KB Home has released its earnings report for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended Nov. 30, with total revenues for the year up 34% and net income up significantly since last year's loss.

Revenues for the fiscal year came in at $2.10 billion, compared to $1.56 billion in 2012. This is due in part to a 14% increase in homes delivered and an increase in the average selling price, which rose 18% to $291,700.

KB Home reported growth in both revenue and income for the third quarter, with total revenue up 29% to $549 million, compared with a third-quarter 2012 reading of $424.5 million.

The average selling price of a home increased 22% to $299,100, year-over-year. This represents 13 consecutive quarters of year-ago gains.

Net income increased to $27.3 million, up drastically from year-ago figures of $3.3 million. When considering the nine-month period ended Aug. 31, net income went from a loss of $66.7 million in 2012 to a positive net of $11.8 million this year.

Citing growth in the Northeast Florida region, KB Home has bumped Todd Holder up from executive VP to president of the homebuilder's Jacksonville division.

Holder, who has more than 20 years of homebuilding experience, will be responsible for all of KB Home's operations in Northeast Florida, including land acquisition, construction, sales and customer service.

KB Homes has appointed Tom Dunn as the newest president of its D.C. Metro division. With 20 years of home-building experience specific to the Washington, D.C., area, Dunn will oversee the entirety of the company's regional operations.

Previously, Dunn held leadership positions at M/I Homes and NVR Homes and was most recently owner and founder of residential property firm BMD Investments.

In an effort to step up its commitment to energy efficiency and emerging technology, KB Home announced Tuesday that all of its new homes will be equipped with "smart" Wiser home management systems. The feature will allow homeowners to monitor their energy consumption in real time from their mobile devices or computers.

"This system is ... a sign of our times," said Jeffrey Mezger, president and CEO of KB Home. "Not only do consumers want 'smart' phones, they want 'smart' homes as well."

Compared with the year-earlier quarter, revenues were up across all of the company's home-building regions.

KB Home has acquired land within the Elworthy Ranch property in the town of Danville, Calif. Development of the site will begin soon, and the home builder expects groundbreaking on new model homes before the end of the year. KB Home plans to construct 84 Built to Order single-family homes in the new community, Quail Ridge.

Los Angeles-based KB Home reported a second quarter net loss of $24.1 million, compared with a net loss of $68.5 million in the year-earlier quarter.

For the second quarter ended May 31, revenues totaled $302.9 million, up 11% from $271.7 million for the second quarter of 2011. The company pointed to an increase in the number of homes delivered and a higher average selling price.

KB Home is being sued by a group of homeowners in Cary, N.C., because it installed weather barriers behind fiber cement siding in some residential developments but not others, according to a case summary provided by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly. 

A Business Court judge certified the lawsuit, describing the class as "all persons in the state of North Carolina who own a home that was constructed by KB Homes without a weather-restrictive barrier behind the exterior veneer of Hardiplank cement fiber lap siding."
