A report in Seeking Alpha Thursday revealed that Sears Holdings was planning on laying off at least 5,457 workers before the holidays, as well as closing more than 100 stores.

Sears spokesman Howard Riefs did not respond to Seeking Alpha's request for comment, though his name was on the bottom of the liquidation sale notices obtained by local media.

Kmart said its store payment systems were penetrated by cybercriminals who used a form of malware undetectable by current anti-virus systems.

The retailer said its information technology team on October 9 detected its payment data systems had been breached and immediately launched a full investigation working with a leading IT security firm. It was determined the breach began in early September and upon detection Kmart said it was able to quickly remove the malware.

Describing second-quarter earnings as "unacceptable," Sears Holdings Corp. chairman and CEO Edward Lampert added that his company's transformation is continuing and online sales are growing.

The company reported second-quarter net loss of $573 million, compared with a loss of $194 million in the same quarter last year. Revenues decreased $858 million to $8.0 billion for the quarter ended Aug. 2, 2014.

Kmart has a new president and chief member officer in Alasdair James, who will be leaving his job as Tesco's commercial director, global business.

In his new role, James will be charged with driving the Kmart format strategy, managing the Kmart P&L and aligning merchandise, marketing, pricing and selling for Shop Your Way members.

Shop Your Way members at Sears and Kmart will now have 2,000 more store locations from which to elect Free Store Pickup services.

Using the integrated shopping option, customers can pick up their online orders at their choice of over 2,000 locations nationwide, ready in five minutes or less. This is especially convenient for customers who wish to buy Kmart supplies, but live substantially closer to a Sears location.

The service also makes it possible to obtain free pickup for exclusive brands like Bongo and Outdoor Life.

Hoffman Estates, Illinois-based Sears Holdings chairman and CEO Edward Lampert beat the drum of “transformation,” as the retailer posted another quarter of declines in consolidated sales and earnings.

The good news: Online and multichannel sales grew 26% over the same quarter last year. And Sears Domestic comp-store sales grew 0.2%.

There are more store closings in Sears’ future. In an address at Sears Holding Corp.’s annual shareholders meeting, chairman and CEO Edward Lampert said the company would close stores and look for ways to leverage its real estate as it continues to focus on integrated omnichannel retail and its Shop Your Way rewards program.

"Closing stores is going to be part of our future," Lampert said. "I'd rather do (fewer closures) rather than more, but the world has shifted."

Kmart and Sears are among a group of companies identified as “the least engaging brands of 2014,” in a recently released index of customer loyalty.

"A brand can't do well in today's marketplace if it can't engage consumers, no matter how many ads are run, and no matter how much social networking one does," said Robert Passikoff, founder and president of Brand Keys, a New York-based brand loyalty and emotional engagement research consultancy.

Sears Holdings’ CEO Eddie Lampert strongly defended his company in his annual letter to shareholders, saying not only does he believe Sears is headed in the right direction, but that “the entire retail industry is headed to where we already are.”

The letter was released on Thursday, Feb. 27, the same day that the retailer posted its fourth quarter earnings report. Sears lost $1.36 billion last year as sales continued to fall and it closed stores as part of its plan to transform itself into a “member-centric” retailer.

Sears and Kmart recalled Kenmore brand oscillating fan heaters due to fire and burn hazards, according to a release Wednesday from the Consumber Product Safety Commission.

The stores received seven reports of the fan heaters smoking or catching fire. There has been one report of smoke inhalation and another of a blister to a consumer's finger.

The products were sold at Sears and Kmart from September 2013 through November 2013 for about $40. The manufacturer of the products is Collins Co., of China.

Despite continued talk about turnaround efforts, Sears Holdings widened its loss in the third quarter after sales fell at both Sears and Kmart. 

The company reported a net loss for the quarter ended Nov. 2 of $534 million, or $5.03 a share, from $498 million, or $4.70 a share, a year earlier.

On Veteran's Day, Sears launched its sixth annual Heroes at Home Wish Registry to help servicemen and women purchase clothes, toys, holiday decorations and other gifts.

Sears will be accepting donations (non-tax-deductible) through Nov. 22 both in-store and online, 100% of which will go toward military families across the country in the form of an e-gift card.

Kmart is rolling out a lease-to-own financing program for stores across the country this holiday season, expanding access to merchandise valued at $150 and over for customers and Shop Your Way members.

The program, which allows customers to take home higher-priced items with no credit requirement, was initiated in various test markets beginning Oct. 15 and will be available in all stores by Nov. 22.

Tara Poseley, the former president of Sears Holdings Corp's Kmart apparel division, has been tapped by Lululemon Athletica Inc as the company's new chief product officer.

In her new role, Poseley will lead the company's merchandising and design team. She will replace former CPO Sheree Waterson, who left in April. Following her departure, the company split the role into two jobs; Jennifer Battersby was recently hired to fill the other position of SVP sourcing.

Sears Holdings Corp. announced its plan to host its first-ever Invite a Veteran to Work Day on Nov. 6. The event will take place at its headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill., as well as 1,800 other Sears and Kmart locations across the nation.

The event is designed to honor vets, provide them with an educational tour of the company's operations and offer support for transitioning into the civilian workforce. Additionally, attendees will be encouraged to apply for various career opportunities with Sears.

A report from Cleveland Research points to significant management turnover at Sears, which has been linked to frustrations over inventory reduction aimed at improving cash flow.

The activity is nothing new for the struggling retailer, whose sales have dropped every year since 2007. Turnover has been a continued theme, with former CEO Louis D'Ambrosio exiting the scene in February and chairman Edward Lampert, who had no experience in retail, taking his place.

With fewer Kmart and Sears full-line stores, Sears Holdings revenues declined 6.3% to $8.871 billion in the second quarter ended Aug. 3. 

The company also saw domestic comparable-store sales decline 1.5% -- down 2.1% at Kmart and down 0.8% at Sears Domestic.

The company posted a net loss of $194 million, compared with a net loss of $132 million in the same quarter last year. Year to date, the company reported a net loss of $473 million.

No matter how you slice them, the numbers of the HCN Top 300 Industry Scoreboard reflect the rising housing market, increased spending on the home and an easy comparison with the previous year's performance.

Of the leading 300 home channel retailers, 277 show positive sales in the most recently completed finished fiscal year, and 12 show declines. Eleven others are listed as flat.

Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears Holdings Corp posted a third quarter net loss from continuing operations of $498 million, compared to a net loss of $410 million in the same quarter last year. 

Sears Domestic's comparable store sales declined 1.6% in the third quarter ended Oct. 27. Kmart's comparable store sales declined 4.8%, and Sears Canada's comparable store sales declined 5.7%. Revenues decreased $548 million to $8.9 billion for the quarter.
