Armstrong World Industries is kicking off construction at its Lancaster, Pa. facility, where it's spending $41 million to expand its manufacturing capacity to include luxury vinyl tile (LVT) for commercial and residential applications.

Spartanburg, S.C.-based Merit Distribution Group hired Paul Van Noy as category manager, responsible for the direct management of vendor lines including sales growth, profitability and inventory rationalization.

"We are very pleased to have Paul joining the Lancaster team," said Mitch Jolley, CEO of the Merit Distribution Group. "As an industry veteran, Paul has a wealth of knowledge and expertise that will bring immediate benefits to our customers and vendors."

Merit operates the Lancaster, Merit Supply, Merit Trade Source and Marit Pro trade names.

US LBM Holdings, the fast-growing acquisition-oriented lumberyard company has struck again.

The Green Bay, Wis.-based holdings company acquired New Holland, Pa.-based Musselman Lumber from partners Galen Eby, Joe Good and Bob Quinlivan. 

Founded in 1911, Musselman is a building material supplier in Central Pennsylvania with two locations serving Lancaster, Pa. and its surrounding counties.

Armongstrong World Industries is investing $41 million in its Lancaster, Pa. facility to promote the manufacture of luxury vinyl tile (LVT). The company had announced its plans to make the investment back in July, but had yet to choose a location.

"We thank the commonwealth and our employees for their support of this investment," said Armstrong Flooring CEO Frank Ready. "By bringing this manufacturing to the U.S., we leverage our manufacturing expertise and create a strong cost, quality and service position for a very exciting product category."

Lancaster, Pa.-based Armstrong World Industries reported net sales of $706.6 million in the second quarter ended June 30. That's up 5% from the same quarter last year.

Net income declined 27.5% to $30.6 million.

The income declined due to increases in manufacturing and input costs driven by rising lumber costs, and higher labor costs associated with added crews at several solid wood plants to respond to increased demand, the company said.

Lancaster, the paint sundries distributor, has made some executive moves.

Tom Daniels has joined the company in the newly created position of VP sales for the Northeast. He will be responsible for the direct management of the Lancaster sales team and business development for the Northeast market.  

The company also appointed Steve Amaral as its new territory manager covering southeast Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Rhode Island.

Worldwide building materials company Saint-Gobain helped The Philadelphia Chapter of Rebuilding Together hold a three-day community rebuilding effort at 62nd Street and Lancaster Avenue. 

The Valley Forge, Pa.-based company sent several employee volunteers to the site.

The Lancaster Paint Las Vegas Buying Show opened its doors, marking a collaboration with the National Hardware Show to allow buyers to browse and buy the paint and sundries category in one place.

The two-day Lancaster event at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, next door to the Las Vegas Convention Center, opened Wednesday with some 100 exhibits.

Whether it’s a product designed to bring efficiency to the home, save time for the DIYer or allow a consumer a chance to feel good about buying a Made-in-the-USA product, show organizers have taken steps to give permanence to the show-floor activity.

The May 1 to 3 event at the Las Vegas Convention Center will see a few new twists.

For the first time at the show, a “Made in the USA Pavilion” will showcase domestic-made products.

Lancaster, Pa.-based Armstrong World Industries has acquired Intalite Inc., operating under the name Simplex. The acquisition will strengthen Armstrong's capabilities in the North American specialty ceiling market and supports the company's growth strategy, including the expansion of its global leadership and manufacturing presence in targeted markets.

Terms of the purchase were not disclosed. Simplex will become part of the Armstrong Building Products division.

The Merit Group, a nationwide distributor of paint sundries that does business as Lancaster and Five Star, has announced the appointment of Mike Smith as its new VP procurement. Smith will succeed Pat Rourke, who served as VP procurement since 2003.

Smith has been in the role of president of Merit Supply, a division of the Merit Group specializing in the automotive aftermarket, for the past 11 years and will continue to oversee this division in his new role. Prior to that, Smith held the positions of VP purchasing and purchasing director from 1992 to 2000.

Orgill, Distribution America, Ace Hardware, True Value and Lancaster make up the list of co-ops/distributors signed up for the new Buying Desk Program so far, according to organizers of the National Hardware Show.

Independent retailers attending the May 10-12 event in Las Vegas will have instant access to new products introduced at the event  through the show’s new Buying Desk Program. On the flip side, suppliers attending the 2011 event will be able to sell products to independent retailers through their existing co-operative and distributor programs.
