One of the lessons of legislative lobbying is this: If you’re not in front of lawmakers with your message, somebody else is. 


Operating under that theory, and armed with position papers and talking points, lumberyard executives and members of the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) descended on the halls of power in Washington, D.C., last month for the group’s annual Legislative Conference, parts of which were co-hosted with the Windows and Doors Manufacturers Association (WDMA).

Washington, D.C. -- Indiana Congressman Mike Pence told lumberyard owners gathered here that it is time to "pick a fight" for fiscal responsibility in Washington.

Pence, from Indiana's 6th congressional district, received the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association's (NLBMDA) Legislator of the Year award. The presentation was part of the 2011 NLBMDA Legislative Conference.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage, along with business groups and other supporters, are trying to repeal a 2007 law that requires communities to consider the economic impact of "big-box" stores such as Home Depot, Lowe’s and Walmart before issuing building permits.
