Preliminary estimates of consumer confidence weighed in at 82.3 in March, beating June 2013's figure of 82.1 and reaching a high not seen since January 2008, according to The Conference Board.

Confidence had slipped in the fall and winter, with February's score coming in at an upwardly revised estimate of 78.3. All indications are that consumers are shaking off their winter doldrums and are looking ahead to a sunnier spring and summer season.

January 28, 2014

Consumer confidence rebounded to 80.7 in January, its highest level since August of last year, according to the Conference Board. Confidence had rebounded in December as well to a downwardly revised figure of 77.5.

After two months of decline in the wake of the partial government shutdown, consumer confidence has bounced back to its highest level since September, according to The Conference Board.

December's index came in at 78.1, up from an upwardly revised figure of 72.0 in November and 72.4 in October.

October 29, 2013

Consumer confidence took a big hit in October.

At 71.2, the index was down 11.2% from September's upwardly revised figure of 80.2, the Conference Board reports.

Confidence had declined slightly in September as well (from August's 81.8), which suggests that the Congressional standoff wasn't the only factor driving October's figures down (though it was still one of the sharpest drops since last January, during the sequestration crisis).

September 24, 2013

After making marginal progress in August, the Consumer Confidence Index dipped back down to 79.7 in September, according to The Conference Board.

Though September's figures are down from August's upwardly revised metric of 81.8, they still demonstrate substantial year-over-year growth compared with September 2012, when consumer confidence was at 68.4.

August 27, 2013

Consumer confidence was up slightly from July's upwardly revised score of 81.0 to 81.5 in August, though it still fell below June's revised score of 82.1 (up dramatically from 74.3 in May).

According to The Conference Board, the Present Situation Index dipped to 70.7 from 73.6, and the Expectations Index remained fairly positive at 88.7 (up from 86.0 in July).

November 29, 2011

The Conference Board reported Tuesday morning that its Consumer Confidence Index increased to 56.0 in November, up from 40.9 in October.

That's not the only metric improving. The Expectations Index rose to 67.8 from 50.0, and the Present Situation Index increased to 38.3 from 27.1.

It's certainly not partying like 1985 -- when the Index was set at 100. But it's an improvement welcomed by Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center.
