The National Retail Federation today formally filed an appeal of the antitrust lawsuit settlement covering credit card swipe fees.

The retail group called on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn a lower court’s ruling.

The National Retail Federation today asked a federal judge to “right or reject” a proposed settlement of an antitrust lawsuit over credit card swipe fees, saying the measure needs to be rewritten to do more to bring the soaring fees under control and that retailers who don’t support it should be allowed to completely opt out.

The National Retail Federation welcomed today’s announcement that the Federal Trade Commission plans to investigate patent trolls.

“Patent trolls are a drain on the economy,” NRF SVP and general counsel Mallory Duncan said. “It’s time for Washington to put an end to this abuse of our nation’s laws. Seeing this issue receive top-level attention from the FTC is a significant development.”

The National Retail Federation Wednesday said that legislation introduced in the House to repeal debit card swipe fee reform would cost consumers more than $6 billion a year in savings that merchants plan to pass along to their customers.
