The home improvement marketing industry may think it knows contractors. And opinions differ on the best ways to study their purchasing habits.

But one thing is clear according to a presentation here at the Home Improvement Research Institute Spring Conference: contractors are a difficult group to research.

Mark Delaney, VP of Client Service for Media, Pa.-based SSRS, listed the challenges faced by researchers reaching out to contractors, who account for about 30% of sales at big box retailers.

Add this intelligence to the battle of the sexes: In almost every home improvement category, men value "brand" over "price" more frequently than women do.

That's part of the story from research from Media, Pa.-based ICR, the international research and consulting firm, conducted on behalf of HCN. Almost a third of future projects were described as “other room” in the study, conducted July 8 to 10 using MarketTools ZoomPanel of opted-in consumers.

Consumers may be falling out of love with their front-load washing machines, according to a survey by The NPD Group, a market research firm based in Port Washington, N.Y. A study of consumer shopping habits in the kitchen appliance category showed that top-load washers are outpacing front loaders in terms of dollar growth, up 8% vs. a slower increase of 5% for front-loaders.

A study of consumer shopping habits in the tools and storage categories indicates a willingness to trade advice from knowledgeable staff for a wider assortment of goods. These were the conclusions from a survey conducted this month by The NPD Group, a market research firm based in Port Washington, N.Y.

Eighty-four percent of respondents indicated they prefer purchasing storage/organization and tool products at larger stores with many offerings, rather than at smaller stores with consultative sales staff, but limited stock.
