Taylor, Mich.-based Masco Corp. says it continues to benefit from trends in new home construction.

Taylor, Mich.-based Masco Corp. reported first-quarter net sales of $1.88 billion, up 3.9% from the same quarter last year.

Net income for the giant manufacturer of home improvement and building products was $47 million, up from $33 million in the prior-year quarter.

According to a WOODTV.com report, a Michigan home center has closed its doors after 67 years in business.

A sign on the door at Plainfield Lumber & Hardware reads: “After 67 years we are sad to say we are closing our doors.” 

According to a WOOD TV report, the sudden closing of the Michigan home center surprised customers. WOOD TV also reported that the retailer was being sued by the family of a former owner over a stock dispute.

Sales for the quarter increased 11.5% to $470.8 million. However, UFP's loss widened in the quarter to $1.9 million, compared with a loss of $1.7 million in the same quarter last year.

Questions appear on the ballots in more than one state concerning:

• Medical marijuana use;
• Legalization of marijuana; and
• Same-sex marriage.

National Nail Corp.'s CAMO hidden deck fasteners were used in two decks that took first place in NADRA's National Deck Competition.

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based fastener company's CAMO fasteners were part of the 2012 Best Dock and the 2012 Best Covered Deck, the company said. The dock was built using CAMO Hidden Fasteners and materials, including Douglas Fir, Hemlock, Cedar and AZEK PVC decking.

Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based PulteGroup reported third-quarter net income of $117 million, compared with a net loss of $129 million in the year-ago period.

Revenue from home sales in the third quarter ended Sept. 30 increased 12% from the prior year to $1.2 billion. Higher revenue for the period was driven by a 6% increase in average selling price to $279,000, combined with a 5% increase in closings to 4,418 homes.

Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based PulteGroup posted second-quarter net income of $42.4 million, compared with a net loss of $55.4 million in the year-ago period.

Total revenue from the second quarter ended June 30 totaled $1.07 billion, up 15% from $927.21 million in the second quarter of 2011. Higher revenue for the period was driven by an 8% increase in average selling price to $268,000, combined with a 5% increase in closings to 3,816 homes.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool Corp. signed a deal with Meritage Homes to be the exclusive appliance provider to the builder’s homes, including first-time, move-up, luxury and active-adult.

Whirlpool will provide Jenn-Air, KitchenAid, Maytag and Whirlpool brand appliances to Meritage Homes’ extensive communities throughout the southern and western states.

Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based PulteGroup reported a net loss of $12 million for the first quarter ended March 31, compared with a net loss of $40 million in the prior-year quarter. Reported net loss includes $6 million of land-related charges, which were offset by $6 million of land-sale gains.

The remodeling of the 45-year-old hardware store and rental center included new floors, new counters, paint, exterior signage and a rearrangement of shelving, fixtures and merchandise.

An investigation into the death of a Michigan bathtub refinisher in 2010 has uncovered more than a dozen other fatalities that may be related to the same chemical compound. In the Feb. 24 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, a publication of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers looked at the effect of methylene chloride, a paint-stripping product marketed for use in aircraft maintenance.
