The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) pointed to a significant milestone for builder confidence, which reached its highest level since November 2005 this month.

Confidence in the market for new, single-family homes reached 59 in September, a four-point gain since August.

[The news followed shortly after the Commerce Department reported August housing starts fell sharply from the prior month.]

With the buying season just around the corner, the National Association of Home Builders has studied the March housing starts data and sees improving signals.

Led by a 6% rise in single-family starts, nationwide housing production rose 2.8% above an upwardly revised February rate of 920,000 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 946,000 units in March, according to the figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Jerry Howard, CEO the National Association of Home Builders, will speak at the Spring Meeting & Legislative Conference. He will join Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) at the Washington Briefing Breakfast April 1.

Howard has worked as a legislative analyst at the National Association of Realtors, the chief lobbyist for the National Council of State Housing Agencies, and tax counsel  for the NAHB. He was promoted to NAHB's executive VP and CEO in February 2001.

Kevin Kelly, a Delaware builder and developer, has taken the helm as National Association of Home Builders' chairman of the board.

Kelly is president of Leon N. Weiner & Associates, Inc., and became actively involved with the Home Builders Association of Delaware when he joined the company in 1979. His building experience includes land development, multifamily and single-family home building, with an emphasis on affordable housing.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) anointed a few winners at last week's International Builders' Show in Las Vegas. 

Now in its second year, the Best of IBS Product Awards recognized winners in six categories out of 254 total entries.

Trutankless by Bollente Companies took home the Best Home Technology Award for its revolutionary approach to tankless water heating. Using a custom heat exchanger, Trutankless heats water as it passes through the system, which is aimed at creating an endless supply of hot water.

Phil Kean, president of Phil Kean Design Group in Winter Park, Fla., has been named the Custom Builder of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

The award was presented at a luncheon in Las Vegas during the International Builders’ Show.

Kean was nominated by the Home Builders Association of Metro Orlando, Fla. In 2012, Kean’s company designed and built The New American Home, the annual show home for IBS.

In a letter to attendees, the National Association of Home Builders Chairman Rick Judson pointed to the six "Centrals" of the show, areas that focus on custom building, 50+ housing, design, multi-family, remodeling and sales.

According to the speakers, residential remodeling is maintaining its steady trajectory toward a recovery, a sentiment that was backed up by NAHB calculations and the lived experiences of remodelers in attendance.

The Remodeling Market Index (RMI) rose two points to 57 in the third quarter of 2013, the highest reading since the first quarter of 2004, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). 

The RMI’s current market conditions index rose from 54 in the previous quarter to 58, the highest reading since the creation of the RMI in 2001, driven partly by rising existing home sales.

NAHB Remodelers, the remodeling arm of the National Association of Home Builders, has named Tim Swafford, CGR, CAPS, CGP, of Swafford Construction in Chattanooga, Tenn., the 2013 Remodeler of the Year. The announcement was made at the NAHB Remodelers’ gala on Oct. 17 during the Remodeling Show in Chicago.

While housing starts for August again failed to rise above the 900,000 pace, the National Association of Home Builders celebrated the gain in single-family starts.

The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) registered a three-point gain in builder confidence in August. The metric, which indicates builder sentiment toward new single-family homes, rose to an eight-year record of 59.

Two of the HMI's three components were buoyed by this positive momentum. Sentiment toward current sales conditions also went up three points to 62, with sales expectations for the next six months up a point to 68. Sentiment toward the traffic of prospective buyers was unchanged at 45.

A total of 247 metropolitan areas across 49 states and the District of Columbia qualified for inclusion on the National Association of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index (IMI) for August. This number is down from 255 metros in July, but it is about three times the number of metros that qualified for the list in August 2012.

On July 16, the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index posted its strongest reading since January 2006.

On the following day came the Commerce Department's residential construction numbers — a disappointing 9.9% decline in the pace of housing starts nationwide.
