The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association convention was held in Washington DC on March 31 thru April 2. I was in attendance with my fun and beautiful wife Melinda Ganahl. After I took the role of the WCLBMA President in late 2013, [WCLBMA Executive Director] Ken Dunham and I discussed the various duties I needed to perform. On that list was attending the National Legislative Conference in DC. The purpose of my being there was to represent our West Coast interests.

Housing starts regained some lost momentum in March. Monthly retail sales performed better than they did in 2013, though the December - February period followed a downward trajectory both years.

The first quarter of 2014 was kind to PPG Industries' top-line revenue and its profits.

Net sales for the three months ended March 31 were $3.64 billion, up 17.1% year-over-year.

Profit from continued operations was $277 million, up roughly 45% from $191 million in the first quarter of 2013.

Brooke Grothe of Irwin Industrial Tool Group received a Presidential Award at the Reliable Distributors Management and Marketing Conference, held recently.

The award is presented to members and vendors for their outstanding commitment and leadership provided to the group.

Also during the conference, which carried the them “Living in America,” Reliable Distributors introduced new marketing programs, including a Made in USA-focused effort.

Integrity Composites, the manufacturer of DuraLife Decking and Railing, signed a distribution agreement with Rochelle, Ill.-based Cedar Siding Inc. to distribute their products in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

In Canon City, Colo., Fontana True Value is carrying a new stamp of approval: “True Value Best Hardware Store in Town.”

Jim Fontana and Susan Palladino accepted the designation during a True Value Co. ceremony in Atlanta, during which 13 stores were honored.

In Canon City, Fontana True Value is known for empowering employees to make decisions, including returns and price matching. 

“Every day I get customer feedback about how friendly and helpful the employees are,” said Fontana.

GE is behind the latest eco-forward move in San Francisco -- specifically, that of the iconic 16-ft. crab wheel at the gateway of Fisherman's Wharf.

Together with the Arrow Sign Company, GE helped restore the landmark with new LED sign lighting systems that will save an estimated 80% in lighting energy usage.

The latest Living Spaces home furnishings store in Phoenix features a collaboration between the California-based retailer and home improvement TV star Jeff Lewis.

As Living Spaces’ Creative Director, Lewis’ designs and curated rooms can be viewed in the store’s “Styled by Jeff Lewis” gallery. Lewis hosts Bravo’s Flipping Out and Interior Therapy

Located off the 10 freeway at the 67th Ave. exit in Phoenix, the Living Spaces Phoenix showroom is the company’s second location in Arizona.

It's the timing agreement that just won't quit.

Louisiana-Pacific Corporation and Ainsworth Lumber Co. announced Friday that they were extending the outside date for completion of the acquisition -- a third time.

LP's acquisition of Ainsworth was most recently scheduled to be completed by April 18, but that deadline has now been pushed back to June 2, 2014.

With the buying season just around the corner, the National Association of Home Builders has studied the March housing starts data and sees improving signals.

Led by a 6% rise in single-family starts, nationwide housing production rose 2.8% above an upwardly revised February rate of 920,000 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 946,000 units in March, according to the figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.
