It takes a little more to be an "All Star" hardware store performer.

HCN's fourth annual list of Hardware Store All-Stars recognizes hardware stores for outstanding service, as well as growth, innovation and the values of the hardware industry.

HCN Daily will profile the honorees, moving across the map of the United States from East to West -- continuing this week with Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.

Bryan, Ohio-based L.E. Smith Company, a custom laminate fabricator, has announced a new partnership with VT Industries, a post-form laminate slab manufacturer.

The strategic alignment makes the most of VT Industries' mass production capabilities and proprietary slab profiles, as well as L.E. Smith's custom fabrication and logistics chops.

The partnership is expected to lead to an expanded post-form offering, additional size options and an increased production capacity, said L.E. Smith.

Indianapolis-based appliance retailer hhgreg opened a remodeled location in Columbus, Ohio’s Sawmill Shopping Center. The store reopened to the public on Thursday, Sept. 18.

The store is the chain’s sixth Columbus-area location.

Tony and Joni Applegate and their store -- Applegate’s PRO Hardware of Georgetown, Ohio -- were honored as a Paul L. Cosgrave Memorial Award Finalist.

The Applegates opened their about five years ago, filling a need in their community for a hardware store and fulfilling Tony’s lifelong dream of owning a store. And, when the building next door became available, they expanded their store in 2013.

El Segundo, California-based Henry Company acquired West Development Group, based in LaGrange, Ohio, which specializes in silicone and spray polyurethane foam roofing technologies for commercial and residential applications. 

The strategic acquisition of WDG reinforces Henry’s core business of Building Envelope Systems and enhances its ability to deliver custom solutions for the benefit of the owner, occupant and environment, the company said.

Eastlake, Ohio-based USA Insulation, self-described as the country’s largest retrofit insulation company, opened a new location in Suffern, New York.

Franchise owners David Nagy and Mark Wanamaker will serve homeowners in Rockland County, New York, and neighboring Bergen County, New Jersey. USA Insulation’s offering includes its proprietary Premium Foam Insulation.

PulteGroup, Inc. has acquired the real estate assets of Dublin, Ohio-based Dominion Homes, a homebuilder with a significant presence in the Ohio and Kentucky markets.

The deal involves an initial acquisition of about 6,500 lots, with 1,600 additional lots slated for purchase within the next 45 days upon completion of additional due diligence. These lots are spread throughout 27 open communities in Columbus, 11 in Louisville and three in Lexington. The specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Ohio-based flooring company Tarkett has unveiled a new social media contest, #WeLikeItNatural. The contest is an effort to promote its Johnsonite iQ Natural line of vinyl flooring.

Potential contestants can order samples of the flloring and take photos of it outdoors. Submissions will be displayed on the Facebook page for Johnsonite, and there will drawings every week to see what photo moves on. Users will vote for the top three submissions. Winners receive either a Tarkett FitBit or a $500 gift card to sporting goods store REI.

Toledo, Ohio-based Owens Corning announced Wednesday that it had added two new members to its board of directors. The new members are NBCUniversal EVP Cesar Conde and FMC Technologies SVP and CFO Maryann Seaman.

"We welcome Maryann and Cesar to our Board of Directors," Owens Corning Chairman and CEO Mike Thaman said. "Our company will benefit from their broad business experience and diverse backgrounds."

Hardwood flooring company Lumber Liquidators has donated one of its Dura Dance flooring systems to the Cincinnati, Ohio-based Highsteppers Drill Team as part of its Lay It Forward charity campaign.

The 15-year-old drill team recently moved into a new space, but didn’t have a proper floor, which led to Lumber Liquidators installing the Dura Dance system, which features underlying rubber to reduce impact and absorb energy.

Todd Dickson has been named CEO at Cincinnati-based home improvement company Champion Home Exteriors, which spans more than 70 locations nationwide.

Dickson will be replacing James Mishler, who has been leading the company as CEO since 2012.

Kent, Ohio-based Carter Lumber continues down the expansion trail by opening a new location on the north side of Charlotte. 

The facility located at 4401 Pete Brown Rd. in Charlotte made its first deliveries Monday, five days after taking possession.

Ace Hardware affiliate Klinker's Lumber & Building Supply of Waverly City, Ohio, was recognized by the state's House of Representatives for opening a new paint studio in May.

The store's paint studio — essentially a remodeled and rethought version of its paint section — now sells Valspar paints, including their Aspire and Professional line of paints, in addition to the Ace line of paint. The paint studio will also allow employees to mix custom paint colors to match customers' color palettes.

Maumee, Ohio-based Therma-Tru Corp. primarily prides itself on being an industry game-changer. In 1982, the company introduced the market's first-ever fiberglass door, known in its official capacity as the Fiber-Classic.

People were surprised that the doors, with their polished, wood-grained appearance, were made with the materials that they were, remarks Deke Welles on the company website (Deke is the son of founder David Welles and the former president of Therma-Tru).

Westerville, Ohio-based Elmer’s Products, Inc. continues to expand its reach among home improvement crowds, the glue giant is rolling out a color changing wood filler. 

The wood filler, which is sold in four- and eight-ounce tubs, comes in two colors: purple that dries white, and pink that dries natural. The color-changing element takes the guesswork out of knowing when your handiwork is ready to be painted, sanded or stained.
