Is he right? I don't know, but it seems as if Washington, D.C., is quite a mess these days, with a mounting deficit and acrimonious factions.

Still, one of the highlights on the HCN calendar is the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. This year's event, in addition to several rounds of strategizing and lobbying, featured presentations from not one, but two politicians.

Hilsheimer was executive VP and CFO of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co., the Columbus, Ohio-based insurance and financial services company, from 2007 through 2009. He then served as president and chief operating officer of Nationwide Direct & Customer Solutions, and most recently was president and chief operating officer of Nationwide Retirement Plans.

The contemporary door styles reflect four aesthetic feelings, according to the company: Eclectically Chic, Mid-Century Modern, Retrospective and Distinctively Modern.

“Pulse doors capture a modern feel, but at the same time bring you back to the 1940s through 1960s when door styles were simple,” said Derek Fielding, senior product manager for Therma-Tru Corp.

In Hartville, Ohio, sits America's largest independent home center at 305,000 sq. ft. In the middle of Hartville Hardware sits a house constructed entirely of U.S.-made products — from the foundation to the sheet rock, paint and appliances.

"There's definitely been an increase in people wanting to buy U.S.-made products," says Howard Miller, president of Hartville Hardware, a member of the Do it Best co-op. "General Electric makes washers and dryers in the U.S. and people love that. They're asking for U.S.-made all the time."

Scotts CFO Dave Evans resigned from the lawn and garden giant to join a nonprofit research company.

Marysville, Ohio-based Scotts Miracle-Gro announced that Dave Evans has resigned as chief financial officer and executive VP and has accepted a similar role with Columbus-based Battelle, the world's largest nonprofit research and development organization.

Evans joined Scotts Miracle-Gro as director of finance for operations in 1993 and moved through several roles before being named CFO in 2006.

Marysville, Ohio-based Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. reported net sales of $2.83 billion for the fiscal 2012, up 1% from $2.80 billion in the prior year.

Scotts posted net income of $106.5 million for the year, down 36.6% from $167.9 million in the prior year.

For the fourth quarter, Scotts sales were $401.2 million, down slightly from $403.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. The company posted a net loss of $40.1 million in the fourth quarter, compared with a net loss of $53.4 million in the same quarter last year.

Scotts Miracle-Gro and the Butts County Development Authority have announced that the Ohio-based company is expanding its operations at its facility in Jackson, Ga.

The expansion will create as many as 10 addition jobs to the existing work force of about 75 associates. The total capital investment to the area by Scotts now totals $6 million.

Owens Corning has named Michael McMurray as senior VP and chief financial officer, effective immediately, to replace Duncan Palmer, who is leaving the company to join Reed Elsevier, a U.K.-based company.

McMurray, 47, joined Owens Corning in 2008 as VP and treasurer. His most recent position was VP finance leader of the company's $3.5 billion building materials group. Prior to joining the Owens Corning, McMurray was finance manager of America’s Lubricants for Royal Dutch Shell.
