San Jose, Calif.-based Orchard Supply Hardware Stores Corp. plans to open a new Orchard Supply Hardware store in Fresno, Calif. on April 14th. 

The store will be Orchard’s 88th, and the fourth store in Fresno. Grand Opening events include a ribbon-cutting ceremony beginning at 7 a.m., as well as day-long vendor demos, spin and win, kid’s activities and door prizes, including a patio set and a Weber Summit Grill.

San Jose, Calif.-based Orchard Supply Co. CEO Mark Baker described the retailer's efforts to keep the brand fresh while also honoring the company's 80-plus-year history.

An emphasis on the in-store experience and local knowledge is key for the California chain, Baker explained during his presentation to the Presidents Council advisory board meeting during the International Builders' Show here in Orlando, Fla.

"We're not a small big box, but a really big small box," he said.

San Jose, Calif.-based Orchard Supply Hardware chain opened a 60,000-sq.-ft. store in a former Mervyns location, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal

The official opening was Saturday. The store is a relocation of a previous store located in nearby San Jose. It will feature a new format unveiled two years ago in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Orchard, the California home improvement chain formerly known as Orchard Supply Hardware or OSH, is opening a new store in South San Jose on Sept. 17. The new unit will be the company’s 89th location.

An article in the San Jose Mercury News reported that Orchard Supply Hardware is working to distinguish itself from big and small competitors. 

In addition to introducing a new logo and a new brand name -- "Orchard" -- the San Jose, Calif.-based company intends to earn a reputation as the place for backyard home improvement. 

According to Tom Carey, senior VP for Orchard, the 89-store chain anticipates growth, perhaps even at the rate of 10 to 15 stores a year.

Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears Holdings Corp. said it plans to spin off its interest in Orchard Supply Hardware Stores, an 89-store chain that operates in California.

Orchard Supply Hardware -- also known as OSH -- recently named Mark Baker, a former top merchant at The Home Depot, as its CEO. OSH is based in San Jose and posted $660.7 million in sales in 2010, with a profit of $8.7 million.
