Just outside of Orlando, Fla., a 4,181-sq.-ft. home with a clean, modern design is carrying on a tradition now its 29th year -- the unveiling of The New American Home.

The project is sponsored by The National Association of Home Builders, organizers of the International Builders' Show set for Orlando Feb. 8 to 11, and Builder magazine.

After 77 years, Parker Lumber is closing in Maitland, Fla., to make way for a commuter rail station, according to an article in the Orlando Sentinel.

The Florida's Department of Transportation wants almost two acres of the property for an entryway and a 125-space parking lot at a proposed station just north of City Hall. A department spokesman said the deal with Parker Lumber won't be final until late December, but the price tag is about $1.5 million.

Lobbying by local builders and lumberyard owners resulted in a one-year moratorium on school-impact fees in Lake County, Fla., according to an article in the Orlando Sentinel.

Lake County commissioners voted unanimously this week to suspend the collection of the fees -- estimated at $9,324 per single-family house -- until April 1, 2012. The local school board had asked for a six-month moratorium.

The True Value Spring Market officially kicks off today at 7:30 a.m. with a general session at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, Fla.

Also on Monday, the market opens its doors from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m, and a welcome reception for attendees will be held in the afternoon.

Tuesday will see a busy schedule of educational sessions and lunch-and-learn seminars, as well as trade show exhibits on the market floor.

Orlando, Fla. -- The 2011 NextGen "Flex-Home" is focused on four home-building buzzwords: green, efficient, safe and digital.

Another term could be "patriotic."

The modular home currently residing in the IBS Show Village in the parking lot outside the Orange County Convention Center here in Orlando will soon be shipped away to a veteran in need through the Rebuilding Together charity and Sears' Heroes at Home.

The International Builders' Show, the home building industry's largest convention, will convene in Orlando, Fla., next week, Jan. 12 to 15. 

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) event, held in the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, will feature cutting-edge designs, technologies, and products for all segments of the industry, according to show organizers. Among those designs is The New American Home, now in its 28th year.
