Peabody, Mass.-based Beacon Roofing Supply posted a second-quarter net loss of $0.2 million, compared with net income of $3.1 million in the same quarter last year.

Sales increased 5.3% to $416.3 million in the quarter.

CEO Paul Isabella described the second quarter as "challenging."

He added: "We experienced harsh weather conditions in many of our markets, and we were up against a very strong second quarter last year when our existing market sales were up 28%."

Mixed results for Beacon Roofing Supply

Up against a strong comparison quarter, the specialty distributor saw total sales gain in its first quarter as organic sales declined.

Peabody, Mass.-based Beacon Roofing Supply sales increased 4.9% to $513.7 million in the first quarter, up from $489.9 million in the same quarter last year.

Existing-store sales declined 4.6%, or 7.7%, when adjusted to the same number of business days.

Beacon acquires St. Louis specialty distributor

Beacon Roofing Supply announced Friday that it has acquired Contractors Roofing & Supply Co., a distributor of residential roofing products and related accessories with one location in the St. Louis suburb of O'Fallon, Mo., and annual sales of approximately $14 million.

Beacon reports 10.1% sales growth in Q1

First-quarter sales for Peabody, Mass.-based Beacon Roofing Supply increased 10.1% to $404.8 million, the company announced this morning, but most of the gains came in non-residential projects.

Net income for the quarter ended Dec. 31 was $10.1 million, up 28.4% from $7.8 million in the first quarter of 2010.
