After a delay of several days, Lumber Liquidators has released its second-quarter earnings report, which reflected an estimated aggregate net sales shortfall of up to $18 million in certain product categories. Net sales for the quarter still increased, however, by 2.3%, totaling $263.1 million (compared with $257.1 million in the same quarter last year).

Comparable-store sales decreased by 7.1%, with the average sale declining 1.8%. Net income was $16.6 million for the three months ended June 30, down 18.7% from last year's $20.4 million.

The National Retail Federation is making an effort to better serve Main Street merchants and independent retailers via the launch of the Small Business Retail Council, which it announced during this week's Retail Advocates Summit.

The SBRC is aimed at recruiting and engaging small business owners in various grassroots advocacy activities, as well as providing a forum for members to discuss the public policy issues that affect them most.

The Home Depot has promoted Ted Decker to the position of EVP merchandising, where he will take the helm of the company's merchandising strategy and operations. Effective Aug. 4, Decker will transition from his most recent role as SVP retail finance and begin reporting to Craig Menear, president U.S. Retail.

Decker has been with the company for 14 years, during which time he played an integral role in the company's merchandising transformation and led the implementation of new pricing and analytics processes.

Muskegon, Michigan-based energy-efficient lighting company EarthTronics has named Tripp Smith to the post of VP sales. Smith brings over 30 years of lighting experience to bear on his new role, in which he will be charged with increasing sales opportunities and profit, as well as expanding market share in North America.

Over 22 years of his career were spent at GE Lighting, where he performed in various sales and leadership capacities in the company's retail and commercial lighting businesses.

The Fenway Collection has five colors — Green Monster, Boston Blue, Boston Red, Baseline White and Foul Pole Yellow — all of which have been released to commemorate the paint company’s 12-year partnership with the Boston Red Sox.

Consumer confidence pushed ahead to a new post-recession high of 90.9 in July, its highest level since October 2007, The Conference Board reported this morning.

July's figure is also in comparison with an upwardly revised figure of 86.4 in June, where the previous post-recession high had stood.

Taylor, Michigan-based Masco announced that adjusted operating profit grew by 21% in its second quarter.

Net sales from continuing operations rose 5% to $2.3 billion, up from $2.1 billion for the second quarter of 2013.  North American sales increased 4%, and international sales increased 9% in U.S. dollars.

Shares of Stock Building Supply were up Tuesday morning following the release of its second-quarter earnings report, which pointed to steady growth for the distributor.

Net sales for the three months ended June 30 were $344.6 million, up 9.5% from $314.7 million in the year-ago period.

Net income jumped to $5.6 million from $2.0 million in 2013, while operating income got a similarly significant boost to $8.9 million (compared with $3.9 million).

Tile Shop Holdings got a big boost to its coffers in the form of a 14.7% net sales increase in the second quarter, the company reported Monday.

Net sales for the three months ended June 30 were $66.7 million, compared with $58.1 million in year-ago terms. Comparable-store sales increased 0.3%.

Net income for the quarter was $3.8 million, up from $3.6 million in the second quarter of 2013. Tile Shop also saw green for the six-month period, posting income of $7.5 million compared with a loss of $41.1 million the year before.

True Value Company reported strong results in the second quarter, with a revenue boost of 4.5% driven largely by an expanded assortment of farm, ranch, automotive, pet, seasonal and plumbing products.

Reported revenue for the co-op was $429.5 million for the three months ended June 28, compared with $411.2 million year-over-year.

Armstrong World Industries fell short of its stated goals in the second quarter, leading in turn to a lowered full-year guidance for 2014.

"Despite soft sales, we delivered second-quarter adjusted EBITDA in the middle of our guidance range," said CEO Matt Espe. "The softer-demand environment we experienced in the quarter and first half of 2014 has tempered our outlook for the back half of the year."

Builders FirstSource achieved its highest sales level since 2006 as it swung to a profit in the second quarter ended June 30.

The Dallas-based pro dealer reported sales of $426.5 million, up 7.1% from the same quarter last year. Net income was $10.6 million, compared to a net loss of $48 million in the first quarter last year.

Stanley Black & Decker's second-quarter performance saw slow sales growth mixed with strong net earnings.

The company reported net sales of $2.9 billion for the three months ended June 28, up 1% compared to the same period last year. Net earnings attributable to common shareholders was $216.5 million, up from $187.1 million in the second quarter of 2013.

Boise Cascade posted solid numbers for its second quarter earnings report.

Net sales of $961.2 million for the three months ended June 30 marked a 13% improvement over last year's $852.3 million in sales. Meanwhile, net income came in at $26.4 million, up from $10.4 million in the second quarter of 2013.
