PPG Industries has agreed to acquire Westmoreland Supply, a Pittsburgh-based architectural paint distributor with 12 stores in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Upon completion of the deal, Westmoreland will be rebranded under the PPG Paints store brand.

Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries’ third-quarter sales and earnings growth were aided by new technologies and North American economic expansion, said CEO Charles Bunch. 

The company reported third-quarter net sales from continuing operations of $3.94 billion, up 4%. Net income was $377 million, up from $226 million in the year-ago period.

PPG Industries opened its regional headquarters for its architectural coatings business in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. The facility is located in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, approximately 20 miles north of PPG’s global headquarters in Pittsburgh.

Versatex is under new ownership but the same management.

Highlander Partners, a middle-market private investment firm based in Dallas, acquired Versatex Building Products. Founded in 2003, Versatex is a Pittsburgh-based provider of cellular PVC building products serving both the new construction and renovation-and-remodel markets.

Following its agreement last month to acquire Consorcio Comex, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based PPG Industries released what it called a record performance for its second quarter. 

PPG reported net sales from continuing operations of $4.08 billion, up 5.1% from $3.88 billion in the same quarter last year.

Net income increased 13.2% to $386 million. 

PPG announced June 30 it had reached an agreement to acquire Consorcio Comex, a leading Latin American architectural and industrial coatings company, in a transaction valued at $2.3 billion.

Michael H. McGarry, currently executive VP of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based PPG Industries, has been appointed to the post of chief operating officer.

McGarry will have executive oversight responsibility for all of PPGs strategic business units and operating regions and for the information technology (IT), environment, health and safety (EH&S), and purchasing functions. He will remain based at PPGs global headquarters in Pittsburgh and will continue to report to Chairman and CEO Charles E. Bunch.

Continuing its trajectory of recent expansion, PPG Industries announced that its North American architectural coatings business has acquired Pittsburgh-based Masterwork Paint Company.

Masterwork is an independent architectural paint distributor with 13 stores throughout Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York.

PPG Industries has picked up where Sherwin-Williams left off.

The Pittsburgh-based paint and coatings giant PPG agreed to acquire Consorcio Comex, an architectural and industrial coatings company with headquarters in Mexico City, Mexico.

The transaction is valued at $2.3 billion.

Columbus, Georgia-based Char-Broil, a division of the W.C. Bradley Co., named Christine M. Robins as president and CEO, effective June 2.

Robins served for the past five years as president and CEO of Pittsburgh-based BodyMedia, a venture-backed pioneering company in wearable health sensors and software that help consumers and professionals better manage health and wellness. Robins totally transformed BodyMedia via a new business strategy and the diversification of products and customers leading to the successful sale of the company to Jawbone.

Bill Adams, founder and chairman of Adams Manufacturing, has been honored with the 2014 Inventor of the Year Award from the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association (PIPLA).

Adams took home the top honor this year due to his innovations in the design of suction cups, outdoor resin furniture, holiday accessories and other consumer products. It's also a nod to the significant economic impact he has made on the western Pennsylvania region and American manufacturing as a whole.

Pittsburgh-based Koppers Inc. agreed to acquire the Wood Preservation and Railroad Services business of Osmose Holdings for $460 million.

Revenues for the acquired businesses in 2013 were about $390 million.

Versatex Trimboard hired Chad Domrase to join the regional market development team for Michigan and Chicago.

Domrase will report to regional sales manager Chris Hedlund. Active in the building products industry since 2006, Domrase acquired specialized experience with both 84 Lumber and Wimsatt Building Materials in Lansing, Mich.

Versatex Trimboard products are manufactured by Wolfpac Technologies of Pittsburgh.

As it seeks to develop a line of high-performance acetylated wood for decking and other uses, Pittsburgh-based Snavely Forest Products agreed to purchase all remaining acetylated wood left over from Eastman's discontinued Perennial Wood line. 

The purchase will serve as "transitional stock" for Snavely, as it moves to secure a new manufacturer of the product.

BlueLinx Corp. has announced its plans to join the Fiberon channel network in 2014, distributing its PVC decking and railing products throughout the Buffalo and Pittsburgh regions.

“Quite frankly, we were looking for a high-end railing product to complement our existing composite deck offerings, and ended up taking on the complete Fiberon decking and railing line,” said Gerald Schomer, business manager for the BlueLinx distribution centers in Buffalo and Pittsburgh.

In response to Eastman Chemical’s recent announcement that it would cease the manufacturing of Perennial Wood products -- the trade name for acetylated wood -- Snavely Forest Products announced today that it will continue to market the high-performance decking product.

PPG Industries, the Pittsburgh-based coatings company, has promoted Kevin McDonald to the role of VP fiber glass.

Beginning March 1, McDonald will transition from his current role as PPG general manager, reinforcements and leader for fiber glass in the Americas and EMEA. He will succeed Thomas Kerr, who is retiring effective the same day.

Pittsburgh-based Versatex Trimboard hired Dan Smith as a market development specialist for western New York and southeast Canada.

Smith is based in Canandaigua, N.Y. Until recently, he was a sales representative for Lakeside Quality Building Products in Ontario, N.Y.

"Dan brings an outstanding combination of practical knowledge and customer-focused attitude to his new position," said Versatex VP of sales Rick Kapres. "He understands business and he knows his way around a job site, so he appreciates the challenges that a contractor faces in the field."

Winchester, Va.-based Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, is expanding its presence in the Mid-Atlantic region with the addition of Pittsburgh-based Babcock Lumber Company to its distribution network.

Babcock will supply dealers across western and central Pennsylvania, western New York and West Virginia with Trex products.

Blume's Solid Surface Products, a Pittsburgh-based manufacturer of solid surface, quartz and granite countertops, celebrated its 25th anniversary recently.

The company took root in 1972 when Gus Blume and his wife, Dorothy, launched a laminate countertop fabrication shop called Topcraft.

They sold the business in 1988 and replaced it with the modern-day Blume's, which expanded to include stone operations in 2004 and is now a wholesale company selling to kitchen dealers, contractors, millwork houses and builders.

There's a fresh face at Snavely Forest Products' Marketing Operations department in Pittsburgh. The company has recently hired Drew Garrison to spearhead a number of print and online marketing initiatives.

A graduate of Purdue University, Garrison has previously served the steel and advertising industries with his marketing strategy, copywriting and marketing collateral design skills. His position at Snavely will mark his entry into the specialty building products industry.

Pittsburgh-based Versatex Trimboard has announced the availability of a 1½-in.-thick, single-extruded, cellular PVC sheet with the launch of Versatex Max.

The product is available in nominal 48-in. widths and four standard lengths; 8 ft., 12 ft., 16 ft. and 18ft. Versatex Max sheets are promoted as offerig the same tight cell structure, density, core consistency and +/- 1/32-in. thickness tolerance found in all other Versatex products, the company said.
