Pittsburgh-based Versatex Trimboard has announced the availability of a 1½-in.-thick, single-extruded, cellular PVC sheet with the launch of Versatex Max.

The product is available in nominal 48-in. widths and four standard lengths; 8 ft., 12 ft., 16 ft. and 18ft. Versatex Max sheets are promoted as offerig the same tight cell structure, density, core consistency and +/- 1/32-in. thickness tolerance found in all other Versatex products, the company said.

And they are not alone: With one in eight new workers employed during a 12-month period having proved to be a bad hire, many employers that DDI surveyed also are questioning whether they have made wise hiring decisions, according to the study.

Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries reached a deal to acquire the North American architectural business of AkzoNobel, N.V., for $1.05 billion.

The acquisition includes the addition of about 600 AkzoNobel-owned paint stores, creating a combined network of about 1,000 company-owned stores serving the North American market.

Pro dealer 84 Lumber opened a new store on Oct. 26 in Bridgeville, Pa., outside of Pittsburgh, marking the first new unit for the pro dealer in six years. The two-story store will be located on a seven-acre property that includes a kitchen and bath design showroom, a lumber warehouse, railroad spur and truss plant.

Beacon Roofing Supply, one of the nation’s largest distributors of roofing and other exterior building products, has reached an agreement to acquire McClure-Johnston Co., a Pittsburgh-based distributor of residential and commercial roofing products and related accessories. The purchase price was not disclosed.

ProBuild Holdings, the nation's largest pro dealer, has decided to close down some of its newly built facilities in the Pittsburgh area, as well as operations in Hagerstown, Md. 

An HCN confirmation of an internal memo by ProBuild CEO Rob Marchbank last week showed that the Denver-based pro dealer has revisited its decision to operate three brand new LBM facilities in the Pittsburgh region. 

An attempt to reach ProBuild for comment or explanation received no response.

Designed to serve residential and commercial construction professionals, the new store will carry a complete assortment of low-slope and steep-slope roofing materials, siding, windows, doors, gutter, decking and related tools and equipment.

Beacon Roofing Supply has reached an agreement to acquire Cassady Pierce Co., a distributor of residential and commercial roofing products, for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 1947, Cassady Pierce has six locations in the Pittsburgh area and annual sales of approximately $52 million. Closing on the transaction is expected on May 31, 2012.

ProBuild Holdings has announced the opening of a new location in Altoona, Pa.

ProBuild Holdings has announced the opening of a new location in Altoona, Pa., approximately 100 miles east of Pittsburgh. Grand-opening ceremonies will be held on Jan. 20.

The 65,000-sq.-ft. Altoona facility will include a kitchen, bath and millwork showroom, as well as a full assortment of building materials. ProBuild Altoona also offers installation services for both builders and homeowners.

Last year, ProBuild opened two other locations near Pittsburgh, which is the home turf of rival pro dealer 84 Lumber: White Oak, Pa., and Morgantown, W.Va.

Pittsburgh-based Versatex Trimboard introduced a new 4-in. x 6-in. version of its labor-saving, one-piece Versawrap PVC column cladding system. 

The product minimizes field cutting, eliminates mitering and increases curb appeal by ensuring aligned corners on every column, according to the company. The 4-in. x 6-in. wrap complements the 4-in. x 4-in., 6-in. x 6-in. and 8-in. x 8-in. sizes.
