Memphis, Tenn.-based distributor Orgill is a big believer in its model stores and their ability to inspire dealers to roll out new products and planograms. 

At this year’s Fall Market in Las Vegas, Orgill demonstrated four separate store types full of the latest in merchandise adjacenies, signage and retail ideas: Copper Canyon Hardware, Four Corners Hardware & Supply, North Lake Lumber and Frontier Farm & Hardware.

Mike Clark is already looking ahead to Christmas. 

During Chicago-based True Value’s 2012 Spring Market general session last month, Clark, the co-op's senior VP and chief merchandising officer, told member retailers: "We know you're looking ahead to fall and winter and thinking about what's going to help you drive your sales."

Chicago-based True Value CEO Lyle Heidemann had some good news for dealers gathered in Orlando, Fla., during the general session of the co-op's 2012 spring market. Sales were up, he said. So are expectations. 

For the year ended Dec. 31, True Value revenue increased 3.4% to $1.86 billion, as the co-op is riding a wave of consecutive quarterly sales increases that now extends to five. Full-year earnings for the co-op were $60.3 million, down 0.7% from $60.7 million in 2010.

Store design and the art of packing high-volume sales in a small space was one of the front-and-center topics at the True Value Market in Philadelphia.

The company's Destination True Value (DTV) initiative -- its store design and merchandising concept -- came to Philadelphia in a new package that measured just over 5,200 sq. ft. The concept store, on full display at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, included 50% less lineal feet than the medium-size DTV format, but had 68% of the SKU count, according to the co-op.

New faces and veteran exhibitors gathered in the Las Vegas Convention Center on Tuesday for the 2011 National Hardware Show. Always a collection of innovative new products and packaging, this year proved to be no exception, with offerings like the Easy Reach Plant Pulley (you can raise and lower hanging plants to water them) and Heat Zone, a shop light with a heater and a fan, both on display in New Product World.

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Do it Best Corp. announced the appointment of new merchandise managers to replace three retiring managers, effective April 1, 2011.

The co-op appointed Gary Loosle for lawn and garden – green goods, Josh Meyer for paint and sundries, and Chris Steinlicht for rental and store supplies.

You can go home again, after all. Ace Hardware Corp. is returning to its Chicago roots for its spring convention, to be held April 1 to 3 at McCormick Place Convention Center. To commemorate its homecoming, the Ace Spring 2011 Convention & Exhibits will focus on the core values and philosophies that transformed this small chain of stores into one of the industry’s leading cooperatives.


The conference will feature seminars, show specials, new products, and retailer and vendor networking events.

Houston-based co-op Handy Hardware Wholesale opens its 50th Anniversary Spring Market today in Houston. The event runs through Feb. 5.

Handy’s market floor will open at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5.  Market incentives will be enhanced as five market attendees will have the opportunity to draw for up to $50,000 in cash at the close of the market. Following the market close, the member-owned distributor will continue the celebration with a private concert by Sony BMG recording artist Kellie Pickler.

Category management service provider Hamacher Resource Group, announced today that it has been certified to develop compliant planograms for suppliers of The Home Depot.

Category management service provider Hamacher Resource Group, announced today that it has been certified to develop compliant planograms for suppliers of The Home Depot.

Waukesha, Wis.-based HRG is one of six companies certified to develop planograms for suppliers using JDA Space Planning software. The move comes after HRG described as "a rigorous certification process required by The Home Depot."

In Las Vegas during its 2010 Fall Market, the Chicago-based co-op rolled out a full...

Las Vegas -- Anyone who has ever been to a trade show in Las Vegas has probably taken multiple walks through the Hilton Skywalk, where classic photographs of Las Vegas celebrities from Sinatra to Elvis stare out at attendees on their way to the convention center.

This week, many of those pictures have been temporarily replaced by star retailers who have invested in the Destination True Value program.
