Parr Lumber named Jon Friesen as the new manager of the company’s Tacoma, Washington, location.

Friesen most recently served as the manager of Parr’s Portland location on MLK Blvd. and prior to that as the assistant manager at Parr’s West Linn facility.

The appointment is effective Sept. 2. 

Before joining the Parr team, Friesen worked for BMC for 15 years and served as the lumber division manager of BMC’s Tacoma location and the Vancouver general manager.

Portland, Maine-based Emery-Waterhouse, the hardlines distributor acquired by Ace Hardware Corp. in February, announced the new hire of Charles Chibante as VP of Sales.

Chibante comes to Emery-Waterhouse bringing over 20 years of experience in retail, operations, marketing and leadership, including 13 years with Wal-Mart in various leadership positions, as well as eight years as a partner in a family owned and operated construction company.

The Central Network Retail Group, or CNRG, has acquired Parkrose Hardware. In doing so, the collection of hardware store and lumberyard retail brands expands West for the first time, with locations in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington.

CRNG's footprint expands to 45 locations, including the Parkrose acquisition.

"Parkrose is our first step out West and will serve as a foundation for our growth in the Pacific Northwest," said Jimmy R. Smith, chairman of CNRG.

San Jose, California-based Orchard Supply Hardware president Richard Maltsbarger said the future looks bright for the West Coast chain, especially after a $20 million investment in Northern California stores.

The investment includes a complete rebuild of the Orchard Supply Hardware San Jose – Midtown, which will serve as the flagship of the 73-store chain that stretches from Portland, Oregon, to Southern California.

Emery-Waterhouse CEO Steve Frawley anticipates changes now that Ace Hardware has acquired the 170-year-old regional wholesale distributor. Some will be subtle, some substantial, and some as yet unknown. 

The deal, terms of which were not revealed, also marks the beginning of a separation between Portland, Maine-based Emery and Distribution America, the co-operative of nine regional distributors that pool together as a buying group.

As it opens new stores, the San Jose, Calif.-based retailer expects first-quarter comp-store sales gains of about 10%.

San Jose, Calif.-based Orchard Supply Hardware said it anticipates comp-store sales for the first quarter ending May 4 to increase from 9.0% to 11.0%.

The forecast comes as Orchard entered Oregon with the grand opening events for its Portland and Tigard stores being held April 27. The company also recently opened its new neighborhood format store in Yorba Linda, Calif., and plans to hold the grand opening event for this location on May 4, 2013.

Parr Lumber will open its latest window and door showroom on Oct. 8 in Portland, Ore. Called Aloha Window and Door, the 2,900-sq.-ft. design center will feature each of the three top window types, vinyl, fiberglass and wood. The vinyl windows feature Jeld-Wen, Milgard, Cascade and Ply-Gem. Fiberglass windows include Marvin Integrity and Milgard and the wood windows include Jeld-Wen, Marvin and Andersen.

A new forecast from the Portland Cement Association (PCA) nearly doubles the expected increase in cement consumption for the year, attributing the boost to both changes in construction activity and the projected amount of cement used in future projects.

Favorable weather conditions during the first half of 2012 was also a key contributor.

PCA revised its spring forecast upward, anticipating a 6.9% increase in 2012 from 2011 levels, followed by a 5.8% jump in 2013 and a double-digit increase of 10.9% increase in 2014.

A group of preschoolers stung by wasps have transformed their experience into a giant map of Portland, thanks in part to a donation by Parr Lumber. The Maple classroom at Growing Seeds, a children’s learning center in North Portland, was given two large sheets of plywood by the Northwestern pro dealer to transform into a mural of their favorite places in Portland.

CalPortland Company (CPC), a major producer of Portland cement and building materials in the United States, has agreed to pay a $1.425 million penalty to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Air Act at its cement plant in Mojave, Calif.

As announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), CPC will spend an additional $1.3 million on pollution controls that will reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), pollutants that can lead to childhood asthma and smog.

Home improvement retailer Lowe’s has agreed to settle a Justice Department claim that it terminated an employee without just cause after he returned from serving in the Iraq War. The consent decree, which still requires approval by a U.S. District Court in Portland, Ore., requires that Lowe’s pay the employee, Matthew King, $45,000 for back pay and liquidated damages.

Lowe’s did not respond to a request for comments.

On Sept. 29, Habitat construction staff and volunteers found that the truck, power tools and construction materials had been taken from the Victoria Cottages job site – which will be home to eight local, hardworking families -- near SE 204th and SE Stark in Gresham, Ore.

IKEA officially plugged in two Blink Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations at its Portland, Ore., store as part of its partnership with ECOtality, a leader in clean electric transportation and storage technologies.

The initiative is the first such project for IKEA in the United States. Similar installations are planned at eight other IKEA stores in the western United States.
