San Diego -- Scheduling business consultant Ken Wilbanks for the early morning slot was a strategic move at the 2014 Pro Dealer Industry Summit. His presentation served to rouse and inspire a room full of lumbermen -- or "woodpeckers," as he referred to them -- with notions of a tightly run ship.

That's one of the takeaways from a panel discussion here at a meeting of the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association's Manufacturers and Services Council. The session, held here along with the ProDealer Industry Summit, examined the supplier-lumberyard relationship.

J.D. Saunders of Campbell, California-based Economy Lumber was officially installed as the incoming chairman of the NLBMDA.

With that corporate mindset, the four-unit lumberyard company has been named the HCN Independent Pro Dealer of the Year. 

S.W. Collins, “The Pioneer Lumberyard,” serves Maine through four locations in Presque Island, Houlton, Lincoln and its headquarters in Caribou.

NyloBoard's composite wood alternative was among the more perplexing products on display at the ProDealer Industry Summit in Nashville.

The display sample, what appeared to be a wood slab growing out of a snarl of carpet fiber, demonstrated its patented production process.

Roxul Inc., based in Milton, Ontario and Grand Forks, B.C., required a compulsory warning sign next to its ProDealer Industry Summit display in Nashville last week: its live product demonstration involved a flame that was continuously pointed at its stone wool insulation for hours on end.

According to sales representative Dan Brown, people have been slow in the past to realize that the flame was indeed real.

Nashville, Tenn. -- Bradley Farnsworth, president of the eponymous research-based consulting firm (The Farnsworth Group), delivered an address to ProDealer Summit attendees Friday that outlined a progressively greener near-future outlook for remodeling.

In his presentation, titled "Emerging Trends in Remodeling: A Consumer and Contractor Perspective," Farnsworth detailed the experiences and expectations of architects, contractors and remodelers.

Outgoing NLBMDA chairman Chuck Bankston took some time at the open of the ProDealer Industry Summit to formally pass the gavel to Chris Yenrick, who will replace him as chair in 2014.

"I hope I won't have to use this too much," quipped Yenrick as he accepted the gavel from Bankston.

Yenrick, who is president of Smith Phillips Building Supply in Winston-Salem, N.C., stressed the importance of succession planning, grassroots activism and pulling younger generations into the aging industry.

Nashville, Tenn. -- A few months ago, John Burns described himself as a raging optimist. Today he's just an optimist.

That was one of the observations from the real estate consultant's presentation at the ProDealer Industry Summit. The fundamentals of the housing recover are solid, he said. But in the sales office, sales and bargains and price drops surged in September. A survey showed 10% of builders surveyed dropped prices, from zero in the previous month.

Farnsworth created the research-based consulting firm to serve the home improvement, residential building and commercial construction industries. He has ammassed a wealth of experience in category management, store positioning, market segmentation analysis and hybrid market concept development.

Robisch, who specializes in the home improvement and building supply industry, directs dealer/retailer and wholesale service activities for Farnsworth. This includes anything ranging from market intelligence to branding, customer retention and strategic planning.

Among the five speakers scheduled to present at the 2013 ProDealer Industry Summit is Michael O'Brien, CAE, who is president and CEO of the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Assocation (NLBMDA).

At the helm of the association, O'Brien is in charge of the day-to-day as well as various strategic initiatives. He oversees lobbying, grassroots and political action campaigns for the organization, as well as operative functions such as membership services, public relations, federation relations, industry relations and financial management.

The Oct. 23-25 summit is sponsored jointly by HCN and the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA). 

The three-unit Pat Thorne Lumber, co-owned by Pat and Susan Thorne, is a member of the Mid-America Lumbermens Association, of which Pat Thorne is a past president.

A panel of pro dealers will share thoughts on best practices that govern truss and other component operations. 

Assembled on the panel are Chuck Bankston, president of Bankston Lumber, Barnesville, Ga.; Peter Alexander, CEO of BMC, Boise, Idaho; and Dale Carlson, president of Lyman Lumber, Excelsior, Minn.

The Component business presentation is set for Oct. 25, at 11:00 a.m.
