The national home centers made hay with outdoor living categories in the second quarter, with Lowe’s describing lawn and garden as its strongest seasonal category, and Home Depot describing outdoor garden as outperforming its company comp average.

Harbinger Group, the privately held holding company for Spectrum Brands’ wide assortment of home-related brands, is courting shareholders of Central Garden & Pet Co. to buy the company.

According to a letter from Harbinger to CGP shareholders, the offer is a $10 per share bid for the company or a $750 million acquisition of the pet segment.

Central Garden & Pet is a Walnut Creek, California-based pet and lawn supply company.

Outdoor dining chairs sold at Costco are being recalled because they pose a fall hazard.

The legs of the chairs of the Fairview 7-piece patio woven dining set from Dimension Industries can bend and break, according to the recall notice.

Dimension has received three reports of the chair legs bending or breaking and causing falls, including one consumer who bumped his head when falling.

The recall involves about 6,700 units, which were sold exclusively at Costco Wholesale stores nationwide from January 2014 to March 2014 for about $1,300 per set.

A potential crash hazard has caused the recall of an Exmark Manufacturing riding mower.

About 2,200 units are affected by the recall.

The 2009-2010 Exmark Quest ZRT riding mower with 42-in. mower decks have bearings supporting the riding mower’s deck. The bearings can fail, according to the recall announcement from the Consumer Products Safety Commission, resulting in a crash hazard.

Seattle-based Global Harvest Foods, a manufacturer of wild and caged bird food and small critter feed and the producer of the Audubon Park brand, agreed to acquire the U.S. wild bird food business from subsidiaries of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company

West Palm Beach, Fla.-based GeoGlobal Partners, a leading North American provider of innovative water gardening brands, has been acquired by The OASE Group headquartered in Hörstel, Germany.

The transaction has been closed with immediate effect and the terms were not disclosed.

GeoGlobal brands include Gardenique, pond boss, smartpond and TotalPond.

Central Garden & Pet Company has introduced its new BioSpot Active Care brand, a line of proactive health and wellness products for pets.

BioSpot products, which are are branded with a "bold look for stronger on-shelf presence," include flea and tick solutions, supplements, millk replacers and other solutions for common health needs. These include a faster-drying Spot On flea and tick product for dogs and a yard spray that works for up to four weeks and controls more than 47 outdoor insects.

The first fiscal quarter of 2014 proved relatively constructive for The Toro Co.'s sales, but the equipment manufacturer backtracked in terms of net earnings.

Toro reported net sales of about $446 million for the three months ended Jan. 31, a 0.29% increase from the same period last year. 

Meanwhile, net earnings weighed in at $25.9 million, down from $31.4 million in the first quarter of 2013.
