Kwikset has expanded the reach of its Kevo automated smart lock to the Android market with the release of a new Android-compatible app.

Kwikset has expanded the reach of its Kevo automated smart lock to the Android market with the release of a new Android-compatible app.

The app, currently in beta mode, is compatible with Android 5.0 Lollipop (L) software and is available on the Google Play store to Android customers with an Android L device, Nexus 6 phone or Nexus 9 tablet. In the meantime, Kwikset continues to tweak the official app.

Simpson Strong-Tie has released a new RPBZ retrofit post base to reinforce new or existing post-base connections for outdoor structures (think braced cartports, patio covers and trellises).

The base fits any post sized double 2x4 or larger and should be installed on concrete or wood with Simpson Strong-Tie fasteners or anchors. 

The RPBZ base also features a ZMAX corrosion-resistant coating for exterior and preservative-treated wood applications.

Another not-so-hidden benefit: flexibility, especially insofar as installation and applications go.

Made of durable polyurethane, the products will come with a refined woodgrain texture suitable for either staining or painting.

More than two dozen new Classic Woodgrain pieces are being introduced by Fypon, including a variety of crown, casing, baseboard and apron mouldings, plus crossheads, plinth blocks and a closed-ended beam.

WindowTex is recalling a number of its custom roller window shades, citing a risk of injury related to a steel pin inserted in the idler on the shades.

WindowTex is recalling a number of its custom roller window shades, citing a risk of injury related to a steel pin inserted in the idler on the shades.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the pin has displayed a tendency to become dislodged, which causes the shade to fall from the mounting bracket.

So far, there have been six reports of the pins becoming dislodged, though no injuries have been reported.

Boral TruExterior Siding, part of Roswell, Georgia-based Boral’s category of poly-ash products, received distinction from the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program, the company announced.

By including product materials that can be reused in technical or biological cycles, Boral TruExterior Siding became the second exterior siding product in the industry to earn the Cradle to Cradle Certified designation.

The story is playing out at Target, also. During a December weekend at a New Jersey store, an endcap dedicated to Wink told the story: “Smartphone, meet smart home.”

Wink bills itself as the simpler way for a smarter home. (The dot in the “i” of wink is shaped like a house.)

Citing minimal overlap and high growth potential, Toronto-based Norbord is acquiring Vancouver-based Ainsworth Lumber to create what both companies are calling “a leading global wood products company focused on oriented strand board across North America, Europe and Asia.”

Under the terms of the deal, Norbord has agreed to acquire all of the outstanding common shares of Ainsworth in an all-share transaction in which Ainsworth shareholders will receive 0.1321 of a Norbord share for each Ainsworth share. The deal is valued at about $667 million.

According to Kim Oderkirk, committee chairman for the Communication and Cooperation Committee, “the logo represents various aspects of flooring including tile, carpet, resilient, stone and wood. We also wanted the name to be written out and avoid simply using the letters FCLC, as there are so many acronyms currently being used in the flooring industry.

Daikin is recalling several hundred of its Streamer air purifiers over a fire hazard, citing a tendency for the circuit board to overheat.

The air purifiers can be identified by the model number MC75KSU on a rating plate on the lower right side, as well as the "Daikin" label printed on the front. They are cream-colored and about 23 inches tall by 15 inches wide by 8 inches deep.

They were sold by Goodman Manufacturing and other HVAC contractors, as well as online at Amazon.com, from December 2010 through October 2014 for about $540.
