Atlanta-based Home Depot's wind-and-storm aided sales effort in the third quarter presented several category highlights, according to executive VP merchandising Craig Menear.

The company's strong third-quarter performance, which included a 13% net earnings increase and comp-store sales of positive 4.2%, included strength "in the core of the store" and growth in average ticket and transactions.

The Home Depot's executive VP merchandising Craig Menear said he was pleased with the company's first-quarter performance in its core business. Some categories, of course, did better than others.

The company's first-quarter results showed overall comp-store sales declined 0.6%, but several categories were positive -- electrical, kitchens, tools, plumbing, paint and flooring. Hardware also outperformed the company's average comp for the quarter, he said.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSP), in cooperation with importer One World Technologies of Anderson, S.C., is recalling approximately 300,000 Ryobi 1/4th sheet sanders due to a risk of injury. 

Pieces of the fan can break off from the fan assembly and be ejected from the product, posing a laceration hazard to consumers, the CPSC announcement said. 

The firm has received 31 reports of broken fan pieces being ejected from the sander, including two reports of minor lacerations.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Ryobi RTS20 portable table saws. The saws were made in China, distributed by Anderson, S.C.-based One World Technologies and sold at Home Depot.

According to the CPSC, the saw blade on the motor carriage could be misaligned, posing a laceration hazard.

The recall involves about 21,500 RTS20 Ryobi ten-inch, portable table saws. They were sold exclusively at Home Depot in the United States and Canada from July 2010 through October 2010 for about $200.
