The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Annual Conference has been set for Sept. 17-19, 2013, in San Antonio. 

According to its website, the SFI is based on principles promoting sustainable forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk, and Forests with Exceptional Conservation Value.

The 2012 conference was held in Milwaukee.

Handy Hardware Wholesales San Antonio market, Aug. 10 to 12, saw an attendance increase of 11.2% over 2011, the Houston-based hardware co-op reported. 

Handy gave away six Toyota Tundra trucks during the market weekend, and it expects warehouse sales from the event will be at an all-time high, said Mickey Schulte, VP marketing and purchasing.

Dow Powerhouse announced a major new collaboration with Imagine Homes, a San Antonio-based home builder, to offer Dow Powerhouse Solar Shingle roof system to all new home buyers in Imagine Homes' six San Antonio-area residential communities.

Additionally, Dow Powerhouse will be a standard feature on all homes in the Willis Ranch community, scheduled to open in September 2012.

San Antonio — The layoffs, bankruptcies, pay cuts and long hours that have cast a pall over the industry for the last several years were pushed aside for three days last month as LBM executives gathered here to greet old friends, catch up on gossip, and maybe learn a thing or two about how to run a better business. The 2011 ProDealer Industry Summit, co-sponsored by the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) and Home Channel News, hosted 100-plus pro dealers and LBM distributors from more than 65 companies Oct. 26 to 28.

San Antonio — TW Perry CEO Michael Cassidy accepted a plaque recognizing his company’s achievements, shook hands with the event’s sponsor, smiled for a photograph and approached the podium. 

What followed was a Pro Dealer of the Year Award acceptance speech and, eventually, a standing ovation.

San Antonio -- TW Perry accepted the 2011 Pro Dealer of the Year award last week during the ProDealer Industry Summit held here at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio.

"We didn't win this award by ourselves," said TW Perry CEO Michael Cassidy, in his acceptance speech. "Without all this support, without all the mentors and vendors and people who helped teach us over the years, we wouldn't be here."

Cassidy's speech stressed the value of corporate culture, the importance of mentors and the close-knit nature of the LBM industry.

San Antonio -- The National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association (NLBMDA) has announced its new leadership team installed on Oct. 26 at the ProDealer Industry Summit. 

At the association's annual meeting, the NLBMDA board of directors elected Cally Coleman Fromme, executive VP of Zarsky Lumber, as the association's new chair, replacing outgoing chair Joe Collings of Ferguson Lumber. Fromme is the first woman to lead the association in its 94-year history.

The first certified home, named ZeroHouse 2.0, is KB Home's first net-zero energy home and goes beyond the BSAG program's guidelines.

San Antonio, Texas-based Operation Homefront, a national non-profit organization providing emergency financial and other assistance to the families of our service members and wounded warriors, has received a $750,000 grant from The Home Depot Foundation.

The gift will help wounded veterans with home projects and to help repair, rehabilitate and retrofit homes of veterans around the country.

The Tuttle Lumber True Value store on San Antonio Street in historic Lockhart Texas — straight down the road from one of the prettiest courthouses in the state — has a colorful past.


And the owners, with an assist from the Chicago-based co-op, are working to ensure that it is well designed for the future.


Originally a 1950’s-era grocery store, then a True Value hardware store, then an Ace hardware store, then a vacant shell for three years, the site was finally converted to its current form as Tuttle Lumber True Value in mid-2010.

Back in 1961, a group of 13 enterprising hardware retailers pooled together a cool $13,000 to open a warehouse in Houston. 


Their goal was to join together in the collective support of the independent hardware store operator. It’s a concept that continues today at Houston-based Handy Hardware Wholesale, which will be celebrating its Golden Anniversary at its Fall Market later this month in San Antonio.


Much has changed. But much has stayed the same.

As Handy Hardware celebrates its 50th anniversary, one of its Texas hardware and lumberyard dealers is preparing for its 100th.


Seven-location Woodson Lumber, based in Brenham, Texas, operates in the small towns in the economically diverse Dallas, Houston, San Antonio Triangle. The chain was founded by HP Woodson in 1913, and today is run by his granddaughter Ann Chapman.

Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger will deliver the keynote address during the STAFDA 2011 Convention & Trade Show in San Antonio Nov. 13 to 15.

Sullenberger's presentation -- described with the theme "Leadership that Transforms" -- will include advice and observations on peak performance. Sullenberger achieved international fame in January 2009 when he pulled off a dramatic emergency landing on the icy Hudson River after engine failure.
