Brentwood, Tennessee-based Tractor Supply Co. opened its 1,346th store -- the latest in Sealy, Texas.

The new Sealy store measures 15,000 sq. ft. and occupies a site formerly occupied by a grocery store.

International home buyers are making their mark in the Texas market -- and increasingly so.

According to the 2014 Texas International Homebuyers Report by the Texas Association of Realtors, international homebuyers added $11.06 billion to the Texas economy between March 2013 and March 2014 -- their highest level in five years.

To put that number in perspective, Texas accounted for 12% of the total $92.2 billion contributed by this demographic to the nationwide economy. That makes Texas the No. 3 state for international home sales.

Houston, Texas-based Goodman Company is recalling about 233,500 units of its Amana, Century, Comfort-Aire, Goodman and York International Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner/Heat Pump (“PTAC”) units.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the power cords on the units have displayed a tendency to overheat, creating burn and fire hazards.

So far, there have been five reports of the power cords smoking or catching fire, though no injuries have been reported as of yet.

McCoy’s Building Supply opened a new store in Dayton, Texas, marking the family-owned company’s 86th location.

The yard is near McCoy’s Baytown and Cleveland locations.

“Our delivery trucks nearby were making deliveries to Dayton every day,” explained McCoy’s real estate manager Phil Hutchinson. “Since we’ve already been serving its residents, we are excited to officially become part of Dayton’s community.”

Kodiak Building Partners has agreed to acquire Dallas-based Barnsco Inc., a fabricator and distributor of rebar and concrete accessories for commercial construction and road-building applications in North Central Texas and Southeastern Michigan.

Hardware Distribution Warehouses, Inc. CEO and President Kenneth R. Beauvais said HDW will be expanding its wholesale services into the Florida panhandle beginning Sept. 1.

“In addition to our recent expansion into Northwest Texas, we have made the decision to extend our service area into the Florida panhandle,” Beauvais said. “This expansion will result in additional opportunities for our employee owned company.”

The announcement was made at the company’s 2014 Fall Market, which ended Aug. 10 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Kodiak Building Partners purchased substantially all the assets of AO, Inc., a Dallas based fabricator and distributor of doors, frames and hardware to commercial contractors for the office build-out market.

The move brings Denver, Colorado-based Kodiak deeper into Texas, and follows acquisitions of Gulf & Basco and Factory Builder Stores.

Austin, Texas-based Epicor Software Corporation, a global leader in business software solutions for manufacturing, distribution, retail and services organizations, today unveiled the Epicor Eagle N Series.

The solution is described as next-generation retail management software for independent retail businesses. Part of the improvement is a simplified user interface, the company said.

Irving, Texas-based PrimeSource Building Products has announced the acquisition of Progressive Steel and Wire. In doing so, the building material distributor says its paved the way for more U.S. jobs.

PSW was previously part of a joint venture between Dubai Wire and PrimeSource, but with PrimeSource now taking 100 percent ownership and control, the company says it intends to bring nail and wire product manufacturing back to the US, creating new local jobs.

Following the gathering of “open carry” gun enthusiasts at a Texas Home Depot, most HCN readers indicated they would have no problem with a similar event at their locations.

In fact, in a recent survey, 58% said they would welcome gun owners with open arms, compared with 31% who said they would invite those carrying guns to disperse.

Do it Best Corp. recognized its Waco, Texas, Retail Service Center (RSC) team for recording four straight years without any lost time due to a safety incident or injury.

At Waco, and elsewhere throughout the Do it Best supply chain, the distributor has added morning stretches, safety tips and peer-to-peer observations into their work culture to proactively prevent safety incidents. The current safety streak is the longest of any of the co-op’s RSCs throughout the United States.

Beloit, Wis.-based building products distributor ABC Supply Co. will open a branch at 1631 Cooper Creek Rd., Denton, Texas, on May 5. 

The new location, managed by Trent Feenker, will carry roofing, siding and gutter products, and related supplies for professional contractors, according to John Yonkin, ABC Supply’s VP southwest region.

Just days after buying an interest in a Texas sawmill operator, Universal Forest Products has made another acquisition, this one in North Carolina.

UFPI announced that one of its subsidiaries has purchased assets of High Level Components, a building component manufacturer based in Locust, N.C. The deal closed March 31.

A subsidiary of Universal Forest Products has purchased a 50% ownership interest in Upshur Forest Products, which owns sawmill operations in Gilmer, Texas.

According to a statement released by UFPI Monday, the acquisition will help expand the company's footprint in East Texas and western Louisiana, supplying raw material to nearby UFPI affiliates and to new industrial operations that will be established at one of the mill locations.

Ringdale, Inc, the Georgetown, Texas-based ActiveLED manufacturer, has launched a new LED exterior luminary called the ActiveLED Horseshoe Bay Lantern.

The post-top fixture is an enery-efficient, high-performance alternative to 150-watt lamps, with energy savings of 50-80% compared to other solutions, the company says.

"At Ringdale, we are seeing an evolution in LED projects," said president Klaus Bollmann. "Customers that were once focused on changing out primary lighting are now converting more specialized or decorative lighting areas."

CatchMark Timber Trust, Inc. is moving forward with its purchase of 36,340 acres of timberland from Hancock Timber Resource Group, located in the Waycross-Panola properties of Southeast Georgia and East Texas.

CatchMark is also acquiring approximately 1.45 million tons of merchantable timber inventory and increasing the share of higher value chip-n-saw and sawtimber in its product mix. The inventory comprises 84% pine plantations by acreage and 54% sawtimber by tons.
